This is the one I liked the most at the time of the album release. At first I thought it was about his father, then I thought it was about his step father, when I remembered he lived with his mom and step dad, years later, I learnt it was about himslef... I still love this song, great tunes, great lyrics... my first PJ vinyl single...

Great tune and also great live. I feel this, along with Small Town, were the beginning of those great acoustic, folk songs from Ed.

I thought it was about a dead friend and as I've lost two friends, I could easily relate. Then I heard it's about Eddie being a shitty friend (disappearing from people's lives without a notice). I can relate to that too. Unfortunately...

P.S: Every time I listen to that song, I instantly think about my two friends: And now he's back...

After watching PJ20 where Ed talks about how he and Jeff kind of lost touch and seeing the song in missoula, I came up with the theory that the song is about he and Jeff.

I remember getting Live on Two Legs and being blown away by it. wasn't a huge fan of No Code at the time but that live version just did it for me with this song. awesome song.

It's one of those songs that I think will surpass the band, after they are long but gone (let's hope that day never comes).

Furthermore I always get goosebumps when I hear the song being played live. :geek:

From the very first listen, this has been one of my favorite songs, by ANY artist! I was in college at the time, and had friend who would come home from Berkeley, but he never seemed to stay for very long, so this song always belonged to him. Especially the "perfectly unkept clothes" line...So Darren.

IMO, the most beautiful version is from Benaroya.

    Cheers and be well,

Great song...saw it live once but the best version I ever heard was when I was standing outside Blossom Music Center in 1998 listening to soundcheck. The best part was the solo towards the end where Mike hits the first note with this amazing string bend. Just PERFECT! I've never heard it played like that during any show, even around that time. I still get chills when I listen to it!

If i was allowed to take only one song with me to a deserted island, it could very well be this one. One of my favourite PJ songs and one of my favourites songs ever. Brilliant!

Have to go and listen to it now :)

This was the song that wore out my 'repeat' button on my old CD player. I fell asleep to it on repeat for months.

lyrics, guitar work, and vocal delivery. absolutely incredible song.

My wife isnt a big PJ fan, just casual at best. She knows this song though because I have told her probably 10 times that I want it played at my funeral.

One of my favorites, this song always had special meaning to me. It's gone through four different phases for me. First it always remided me of the relationship I had with my father when I was younger. He would come for a weekend and then leave and I wouldn't see him for months. Then when I got older the tables turned, I had my own life and I would visit him, we would have a great time and then I would be off again. The character who's always leaving was me, that was a weird change. Then a few years ago he passed away so the lyrics took on another level of meaning for me. Now I have a son of 18 months and we often listen to this song. Now it's a message of what I will never let my relationship become with him.

Fantastic song! This was on my wishlist before my first PJ gig but wasn't to be unfortunately. Last year in Manchester night 2 after Inside Job, Ed walked forward with the acoustic he uses for Just Breathe and since it was in the first encore that's what I thought he would play. Imagine the joy when he played the intro to Off He Goes and of course it was a beautiful version well worth the wait!!! :D

Just Breathe was next.... :| Now there's a gulf in class if there ever was one.
