Texas Rep. Cites Biblical Flood as Example of Climate Change

In his five-minute remarks today on the Keystone Pipeline, Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, pointed out a "divergence of evidence" on global warming, citing the biblical Great Flood as an example of climate change.

Barton delivered remarks today at the Subcommittee on Energy and Power hearing in support of the Northern Route Approval Act, legislation that would grant Congress the authority to approve the controversial Keystone petroleum pipeline.

"I would point out that people like me who support hydrocarbon development don't deny that climate is changing," Barton, 63, said. "I think you can have an honest difference of opinion of what's causing that change without automatically being either all in - that's all because of mankind or it's all just natural. I think there's a divergence of evidence."

But it was his reference to the biblical flood that left people scratching their heads. Although Barton acknowledged the changing climate, he compared the changing environment to the biblical story of Noah's Ark and the Great Flood in an attempt to defend his claim that natural tendencies can perpetuate climate change.

"I would point out that if you're a believer in the Bible, one would have to say the Great Flood is an example of climate change, and that certainly wasn't because mankind had overdeveloped hydrocarbon energy," he said.

The Bible teaches that God created the flood to destroy the world because of mankind's evilness.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

No, I hadn't. Thank you, Jeanwah. Bill Maher said it best, "The debate is over!"

The evidence is overwhelming. The debate is over. Now is the time to start acting!

Don't you all realize that there is no global warming?

That it is just a Progressive Liberal Democrat plot to....

    Raise your taxes
    Abort your babies
    Create more govt
    Take away your guns
    And create more debt

You can call me whatever you want, and you'll be right since I'm really a mean person, so I don't ask for forgiveness when I say that a 63-year-old man who make such a statement should be put in a house for the mental insane. I'm not a wise man and I don't have much experience (my experience can account for that) and I don't even trust myself sometimes, but I would never trust a 63-year-old dude, ever, whose remarks are quite of a senil person...

I saw it, and saw it again now, I always have a great laugh at something Bill Maher have said before: 3 out of 10 people believes that Jesus will return during their life time... simply hilarious...

Thank you Byrnzie and Jeanwah. We don't get the Nat Geo channel but I've put it on my Netflix "save" list for when it comes out on DVD. Looks very much worth waiting for and watching!

I live in Boulder, CO where the director of Chasing Ice lives. This movies plays every week somewhere in town and or neighboring towns. It has been very well received and reviewed. I had a hard time watching it and don't get how the regressives can deny and ignore what is clearly occurring.

ALso, the director of "The Cove" lives in Boulder as well. If you haven't seen it you should check it out.

Thank you Bentleyspop! I'll put this on my list as well.

I'm wonder how intense the animal abuse scenes are in "The Cove"? Too much for kids to view? I'm asking because I like to share films like this but sometimes the line for what people can handle emotionally is very thin for certain age groups or sensitivities.

I definitely wouldn't show it to kids. It's hard enough for adults to stomach. It's a disturbing and upsetting film IMO. Still something people should watch, but not as children. It could give a sensitive kid who likes dolphins nightmares possibly. :?
