Jimmy Carter Leaves Southern Baptists

Right on, President Carter. I've lived through eleven U.S. presidents and Jimmy Carter is top of my list. This is another example of why I feel that way. I'm not big on religion, but any time someone stands up for what is right, I'm big on that.

Jimmy Carter Leaves Southern Baptists
Former President Carter, a longtime Sunday school teacher, is walking away from the Southern Baptists because of the church’s stance on equality for women.
In an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution published today, Carter says Southern Baptist leaders reading the Bible out of context led to the adoption of increasingly “rigid” views.
“I’m familiar with the verses they have quoted about wives being subjugated to their husbands,” he told the paper. “In my opinion, this is a distortion of the meaning of Scripture. … I personally feel the Bible says all people are equal in the eyes of God. I personally feel that women should play an absolutely equal role in service of Christ in the church.”

I have a huge amount of respect for Carter and many of the things he stands for. Some of my favorite books are ones he as written. As someone born and bred Baptist, I'll take no religion at all versus the wacky that comes out of the Southern Baptist Convention!
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...
I AM MINE
i think religions like the southern baptists are an example of everything that is wrong with this country. i prefer no religion to the crap that this church is spreading.
"Well, you tell him that I don't talk to suckas."
Don't be silly. Religion is just legal mind control.
Religion is used as a weapon.
And for the cowards... It's used as an excuse. "Oh... The reason I hate you is that in Corinthians 4:38, Jesus said 'blah blah blah I didn't exist' and therefore...."
The more religious you are... The less of your own mind.
I'll pile on.
The fewer people we have entrenched in cults... the better off we are going to be.
You have no clue and love to rely on stereotypes.

Most church's and religious people are that way, but not all. I never grew up very religious and don't go to church often, but recently when I did go a man and his partner were announced as new members at the end of the service. Afterwards, everyone went to welcome them. I've also spoken to many very religious people of the same faith who are for gay/lesbian marriage. Not everyone who is religious is bad. Unfortunately, too many do use religion as an excuse for their bigotry.
Because someone goes to a church, belongs to a church, does not mean they must agree
with everything that church interprets. Some people belong to church because they love God.
They really love the people who make up the church.
President Carter is 88 years old ... resolution. I don't know a lot about him
but he strikes me as a gentler soul.
nuttin better than him tell ya the way it is. good stuff

In high school I decided to learn about various religions by going to their respective camps. The Baptist camp was by far the most fucked up, cult-like one (and it was just a normal one - it wasn't some extremist branch like Westboro). It was probably the most disturbing week of my entire life, and I've had some real doozies. I'm pretty sure it was that experience that actually clinched my realisation that I had to be an Atheist. There were a lot of deciding factors there, but the Baptists nudged me over the line. So I guess I owe them a thank you!
Exactly. There reason there are so many different churches is because they interpret the scriptures differently. Many people say all churches are the same, when in fact they interpret things differently.
So that is why I like that President Carter is doing what he believes is right.
