Lollapalooza 2013 for "Music Fans"

So, I have been going to lollapalooza for years now and I have always enjoyed myself because I saw bands that I was interested in or was curious about. When I went for my first time it was easy to get tickets. You could go there the day of and get them at the box office. Now as the years have gone by, more attention has been brought to the festival and understandably it became a little harder to get tickets. This year though, the three day passes sold out BEFORE THE LINEUP WAS EVEN RELEASED! :fp: So, now I sit here and wonder if the people that bought these tickets even care who is performing or just want to go because it is "cool." This is the only festival (that i know of) that can sell out of their three day passes in a 300.000 person venue without even listing one performer.

Well, I leave it for you all to decide. Are these lollapalooza goers really "music fans?" I have my doubts.
"Mine is mine and yours won't take its place.."

  • Who knows? Some may be, others aren't. I think it's unfair though that Lollapalooza is sold-out before an artist is even revealed. I am a big music lover, but if I want to go to a festival, I do want to know some, most or all of the line-up.

I read the rumours about who will be headlining and personally if it's true, I am not too crazy about the choices this year (Mumford and Sons, The Killers and Vampire Weekend are the rumoured headliners). The Killers are ok, I don't know Vampire Weekend that much and I think Mumford and Sons are a great band, but for some reason, they don't grow on me that much. But you know, it's tough to always get superb bands to headline Lollapalooza. I remember in 2011 that Coldplay and Muse headlined the first night, Eminem and My Morning Jacket headlined the 2nd night and Foo Fighters closed the festival. That, to me, would be one I wished to have gone (although I did go see Foo Fighters in Toronto two days after they performed Lollapalooza and Coldplay played a free 65-minutes show at the parking lot of MuchMusic Headquarters). However, there is a EDM festival in Toronto at the end of June called Digital Dreams Festival and I don't think an artist was revealed before the tickets went on sale (the tickets went on sale in November last year and it was announced only last month that Tiesto would headline the festival). However, unlike Lollapalooza, Digital Dreams is not sold out yet.

On a related note, I never intended to go to Lollapalooza because on June 8 & 9, a friend of mine and I will go to Orion Music and More Festival at Belle Isle in Detroit. It is a festival created and curated by Metallica. This is the line-up for the year:

Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Deftones, Bassnectar (headliner of the EDM Tent), Dropkick Murphys, Gogol Bordello, Silversun Pickups, Foals, Destroid, Tomahawk, The Bronx, Datsik, Borgore, Dillon Francis, Flag, Adventure Club, The Joy Formidable, Japandroids, 12th Planet, Death Grips, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dirtyphonics, The Dirtbombs, DEATH, Fu Manchu, Fidlar, All Shall Perish, The Orwells, Battlecross, Cauldron

More artists will be added. There will be other stuff at the festival like James’ Custom Car & Motorcycle Show, Kirk’s Crypt, Lars’ Hit the Lights Film Tent and Robert’s Vans Vert Ramp alongside the Metallica Museum and other fan favorite attractions. So many options, so little time. Both days are scheduled to go from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

The lollapalooza forums do a pretty good job of figuring out who alot of who the under bill acts are based on tour scheduling and gaps in that schedule. Also, Lolla tends to just call up a good portion of the previous years Pitchfork lineup. Both of those are some pretty good indicators of who may play.

But I'm pretty sure they only put on sale a fraction of the three day passes they usually sell. They make more money on single day passes and I'm sure they have some data that more people prefer to one day option.

Glastonbury usually sells out before they announce the line-up, and Coachella has now twice come close to selling out both weekends nearly 10 months in advance without any hints of a line-up.

IMHO, Lollapalooza draws less serious music fans then Glasto and Coachella, but obviously, enough people were willing to buy before the full line up was announced.

Coachella tix are already going for below face value, so perhaps the same will happen for Lolla closer to the actual festival.

Its not sold out though. Just 3 day passes. You can still buy single days for all 3. Its just $270, as opposed to the $235 3 day passes.

But I agree, Coachella is for the serious music fan. Lolla (since its Grant Park debut) was always meant to appeal to as many people as possible. Thats why you get Odd Future, .fun, Animal Collective, Foo Fighters and Lady Gaga playing it. Its not the same objective as 1993 Lolla.
