I love Pearl Jam. :)

I used to come to this site alot. I was so disturbed with what George Bush was doing in Iraq and even more so how so many people were supporting him. I was wondering why. I posed many things. I thought it would be useful to me to find things we could agree on minus the small group of people that like to disagree just for the fun of it.

I am not talking about a consensus on the Iraq war.. but just basic agreements on anything. We are all made of the same stuff physically, and we share the same basic needs and live in pretty much the same envoirnment.

But no consensus on anyting. All discussions are governened by points we are so desperate to make, that even the simplest things can not be done. We can't even reluctantly agree, we can seem to look at all significant consequences of a proposal and say that is sum, this is the best option. If not on a Pearl Jam website.. then there is no hope on a broader scale. :(

Of course there are basic tenets on which many of us agree - golden rule, simple courtesy, freedom of speech, etc. Not to mention the music that brought us here.

Me, I'm not looking to be surrounded only by people who share my views. Opposing opinions - even just differing ones - are healthy. They make me re-examine / reaffirm my stances.

As for reluctant agreement, I've seen many here agree to disagree. Lots of respectful discussions.

We do pretty well here. Just don't tell me where I can or can't hang my clothes to dry.

I think we agree on more than you might think. I know many of us are often posting during what little free time we have at work. I know that time limitation impacts what posts I respond to. There are many times I read something I agree with but I do find myself responding more to posts I disagree with. I wish there were more time to respond to both.

Really Bush supporters here? I must have missed that. Now we have lots of Obama supporters
    so tides turn.

I wouldn't say anyone agrees or disagrees for the fun of it and that statement
really doesn't take people seriously. It assumes something you can not possibly know.
It disregards another poster. Assuming is hard not to do but it is the ultimate judgement.

When one considers the amount of readers, those silent not debating, not giving opinions
it would be hard to make the conclusions you are making.
Actually there could be much agreement and understanding we don't see / hear.

I read an article about how bad people are at listening. Since then I'm working on that...
I even listen to the night sky ;) it rarely argues back.

I often read many post, not to argue or debate, but simply to hear other view points from regular people like myself. But the arguing and debating is fun as well.

Probably enjoying Pearl Jam in a far off land ;)

I think I made my debut on AMT in 2010... gee I might have liked to have read some of that.
I wonder where they all went. :?
With the few I've seen lately disappear, I'm going with a conspiracy theory. ;)

I admit that I do like to disagree for not just the fun of it sometimes, but because looking at things from a different perspective can be pretty eye-opening and offers a chance to really learn something (as long as an open mind is involved). That said, I've seen only a couple times where there was consensus. I wish I remember what those topics were, because it's pretty cool when it does happen.

I have to admit I came here for some of the same reason you mention. I assumed that the vast majority of Pearl Jam fans would be interested in working toward common goals. After coming here for some time now I think that is somewhat true but less than I had originally supposed to be the case.

There seems to be a relatively minimal number of forum members who post here- and by now we can all pretty much guess what will be each others stance on most issues. I still find AMT useful for keeping abreast of current events- I like that about this part of the forum.

  • Lately, I've been formulating in my head something about what I'd like to share with you all; about what I enjoy here on AMT, what I've learned, and about the people I've come to enjoy getting to know.
It is about time though. Summer's coming on & I just won't have the time to hang out here much. I just feel like my time could be better spent. I too, had come here thinking this was the perfect setting in which forward momentum could be built from but I now know this is not the case though I still feel we are missing a great opportunity.
However, when I've got idle time to entertain, I prefer here over the boobe-tube for all the above stated reasons.

it would be so cool AMT could choose something positive, and work together to achieve. It would not only be good for us, but do Pearl Jam proud.

Well, that is why I originally came here. I had this idea that a PJ community on AMT was here cuz, (I'll use that unsavory word -- activism) show up in all things PJ. There's places on this website to participate if you want to chat about music or entertainment etc... but I do think AMT, though says it's a political corner for sharing & learning, was intended for more than we use it for.

here is the beauty of it though, no one would stop you from trying to organize something. I have seen lots of calls to action, and I bet some people who don't even post have acted or been moved to act because of what they have seen. Don't be discouraged because people disagree.

Personally, I come here because I enjoy ideas that challenge my own and I like to challenge others on the ideals they hold dear. A political forum should do that. At what point did this become a place where that doesn't happen? aside from the usual troublemakers who derail discussion, I have learned a lot from many of the posters here and I hope I have taught someone something. If not, I at least got to try.
In fact, this place has been one of the driving factors behind my volunteer choices...so take that for what it is worth...when you voice your opinion it can be heard even when you think it isn't, and it may be influencing people you will never hear from.

    That is very true :)
  • Yes, I thought so as well so I did try that a while back.
If I had to sum up what went awry, I'd have to use another's words (don't remember who it was) but it had something to do with the riders on this train like topics to stay fluid. So, fluid I've tried.
I'm not saying i don't like fluid, when I've got the time, I'll participate in fluid, I just feel we can add to that.
keep just a few topics static for consensus-building.
Anyway, this is the idea I'm working on for a new forum. I feel like an outsider here much of time. I've never been to one PJ concert & I want more than fluid so I will need to move on but that's what I was saying in the first of this; I've been thinking of how to tell you all what you've come to mean to me and that I'll be missing you.

Have a great day. Gotta go.
