very surprised at how quickly they came to a majority decision

as a Catholic, the anticipation is exciting

it would be cool if they picked the fillipino guy ... i can't imagine anyone but an old crusty white guy as a pope ... :)

I think ex-pope's resignation has been on the cards for a while thus giving time for the cardinals to have a bit of a think and reach a consensus quicker. Still 5 sessions...

Call me cynical but I can't really see one or the other making any real difference to the catholic church, how it behaves and how it is perceived. Still think 'nasties' will be swept under the carpet as usual, progress will not be at the top of their agenda, etc.
  • If he clicks his heels three times does he go back home?

The corruption in the Vatican is so thick, a new person at the top will likely make no difference. Much like the U.S. govt.

And then you see the footage of him doing a back flip to enter the balcony to be introduced to the awaiting public.

The CNN e-mail came in with this...

He is the first South American pope. Until last year, Bergoglio was the archbishop of Buenos Aires before stepping down because of his age. He is 76.

Too old to act as Archbishop, but not for Pope?!?!

well ... as expected ... any minute chance the new pope would bring a fresh point of view on homosexuality or abortion or contraception can now officially be eliminated ...

That church will never change ... I just wish they'd quit say 1.2 billion Catholics ... I doubt even 1/2 that number are even practicing Catholics.
