My version of PJ20

I realize I am part of a small minority of people who did not like Cameron Crowes documentary.

It's actually the first time I haven't like his work as I've been a big fan of his films.
Most people loved PJ20 so this is simply how I would have handled it:

Instead of a rushed movie, review the history of Pearl jam and its fans via a KEN BURNS type documentary style over 8 nights.

Night one:
Motherlove bone
Creation of the band
Ten and 1992 tour highlights
(Much of this WAS part of the movie but too rushed

Night two:
Vs hysteria
Eddies withdrawl from spotlight
1993/1994 tour
Origins of "immortality"
Shoe the shoeless 1993 show
Clips from Atlanta and boston 1994 shows
Interview with Abrusse
Interview with band members and Ed on firing
Mikes rehab stint into mad season
(Like Dave Grohl had the balls to do in his film)

Night three
The departure of polished sound with
Vitology and its songs (corduroy , tremour christ , last exit)
Band resentments over Eddies take over of songs
full background and highlights from 1995 self pollution broadcast
Video highlights from 1995 first shows with Jack Irons
Highlights from red rocks and soldier field.
Mirrorball work with Neil

Night #4
1996 no code
1998 yield songs
Jacks departure discussed (interview with Jack)
Matt on board
Clips from Randall's island 1996
MSG 1998 concert

Night #5
2000 binaural songs / out takes
Mikes pain killer addition
Ed's divorce
Rockslide festival disaster
First official release of boots of every show.
2001 concert for America

Night#6
Riot act and the amazing 2003 tour
Background and highlights of State college and
Mansfield 3 night marathon shows.
Mexico tour highlights

Night # 7
The fanbase
The message board
Wishlist parties
World wide phenomena
Extensive interviews with fans

Night #8
2004 vote for change
Lost dogs release
2005 tour highlights
Avocado and the resurgence of PJ in the mainstream media
2006 tour highlights

Band members new families (not just eds)

The end!

I thought the documentary was ok, but it had two major drawbacks:

    1) It didn't really bring up anything new. Most of what was covered was already public knowledge. We know the band keeps a tight lid on their image and what they say, but I was a bit dissapointed. I would of liked to have known more about what was going on in the years the focused on (the 90s). We sort of got a rehash of everything they've already said interviews, magazines, or news papers.

    2) The 21st century.

I did like pj20 but I felt it was missing alot. I'm not sure a project as big as your is the way to go, but I'd watch it.

I enjoyed the movie but it didn't have the tone or depth I would have liked. It's almost like the band was too involved and Crowe is too much of a fan or cheerleader. It was all surface.

I think the "concerts" were a huge part that was missing from PJ 20 movie.,

Of course it didn't cover everything. But the story is very movingly told and and even though its not "about" the concerts, it brings out that they are so great live, because of how much they LOVE to play live. And if you're a fan, you know what that leads to.

Guys, I understand that there wasnt much new in PJ20 movie for the already super fans. But it was enough to convert casual fans like me to more curious fans.

As for the new version idea, could be done for PJ40 maybe, hopefully.

I still would like the guy who did the Foo fighters or Rush documentaries to take a crack a PJ
But of course now they don't feel obligated.

A fan made and narrated one from the folks at "animal productions" maybe???

Single Video Theory. Really good video--documentary-like, but not narrated--about the making of Yield.

Thanks, sorry the acronyms escape me sometimes. I love Single Video Theory, I think it is the best PJ doc/movie so far.

I'm not a big fan of PJ20. Seemed like it just skimmed across the history instead of taking more of a deep dive.

I do like watching it on a Sunday afternoon, but it's not one of my favorites.

My favorite documentaries are the one on Fishbone (one of the best I've ever seen) and The old Don't Blame Me (Ozzy Osbourne). I hated the one Ozzy's kid did, but the older one from the nineties was one of the best.

Netflix has the Fishbone one if you haven't seen it. It's great.

It didn't even include Jay-z..... I mean, wtf. That collaboration was like the modern PJ equivalent of Mirrorball.
...which says a lot about how PJ has changed since Mirrorball.

PJ20 was great, but "New Ed" needs to get over poopooing "old Ed"...old Ed took a 1 chord song in Not For You and made it fucking amazing, because, old Ed gave a shit.

I mean, does New Ed look like he's feeling it up there on stage anymore? It's like: yep, I've settled my issues, and I am rich as balls now, so let's go through the motions and then I can get back to fingerpainting in my designer tree house. When TOTD was doing its pj 20 reunion, he was like cracking jokes and bashing a tambourine.

It's like, dude, some of us do actually still care about this stuff. No one wants to see Santa with his beard off in the men's room at the mall and spoil the fantasy. Not that it should be a fantasy, bc it looks like old Ed took this shit seriously, and fans looked up to him for it. Santa was real, at one point anyway.

But I am glad that "New Ed" is happy and wants to "fix things up" ... He is all like, hey I'm here now and I am not gonna be a hater, etc and I am ready to play ball now just make sure the ukulele concert tickets are a least $185 a piece, etc etc. I am over my issues, i am an "adult" now, Bruce Springsteen convinced me that I should just sell out once and for all and buy a house in rumson but still pretend to represent the common man, etc etc hey let's make some crappy karaoke promo quality music videos now and forcibly try to make people Iike us rather than being all about the music which is what drew people to us in the first place etc etc

Er no wait, strike that, reverse it.

But hey, people grow, people change... You just hope sometimes they have the sense to change back before its too late. Like Chris Cornell ... He pulled himself out of a solo weirdo hole and America is all the better for it now. Soundgarden is making rock and roll music again.

PJ just need to up their game again...

Who am I kidding the last two albums blew and PJ20 might as well have been a Lifetime Television movie. This band is in retiree mode.

    Next Album spoiler alert!!

    Title: Going Through the Motions

    Track listing:
    1) some fast 2 minute up tempo faux rocker song that will only be played early in the setlist on the upcoming tour and will rightfully disappear afterward pretty much forever because the next album's lead two minute uptempo faux rocker song will replace it
    2) some song that initially starts out like it might be a little rockin and good but then quickly goes to a wussy chorus that renders the song totally impotent
    3) the new single. It's ok. Kind of ok. It will do, some thought has been put into it, there's nothing overtly wrong about it, nothing amazing about it, but it will do. Ok, ok, there might be a chance here.
    4) little bit slower song looks like we might have a rock ballad here and... no, no we don't, where a normal good song would open up into some type of guitar jam this thing goes to an uninspired bridge and another six repetitions of the same chorus and suddenly I feel like I am in line at walmart
    5) another 2.5 minute quirky faux punk song, this one featuring mike McCready for all of 8 seconds
    6) Ed solo song that he brought to the studio, and has insisted be put on tape... With the two other guitarists essentially relegated to making accent noises. This one uses a recorder at the end, and oh I feel so sad now..
    7) something that might actually possibly be considered adult contempo.
    8) and we're starting off blues shredding and we've got a chance! But Ed starts singing and it sounds terrible and why is Jay-z rapping all of the sudden???
    9) stone song, that should have gone on Stone's solo album, that should have gone into the trash can (harsh)
    10) great album closer. Too great. It might be played live only a handful of times in an encore, and just generally brushed aside bc the band will be playing "all night" for the twelfth time in the night's setlist. This song will sadly be overlooked.

That's all I got for now. :corn:

You know what dude, I have to say I agree with you 100%. Funny to read this because you summed up the exact conversation I had with my brother today (while we were listening to King Animal coincidentally!). I don't think many people here would agree with you but I think many 10C members in general would. That said, I'm still staying positive for the next record and can't wait for Chicago. Peace

Its to bad with said to have over 1500 hours of tape the just rehashed everything we already know and could easily be found out with a few minutes reading in here.

I dont think they will get any new hardcore fans tagging along for the ride home. Thats why I wish the dove a bitmore deeper into things like where Stone kept his Grammy :D

I am constantly updating it, I want to have over 90% of Pearl Jam's album stuff, plus duets, by the way for anyone wondering Mike McCready has his own playlist it is 108 videos currently, so I did not forget Mike, some stuff like Johnny Guitar and Ole have been intentionally left out replaced with covers instead

It was OK. Definitely expected more. They took about 30 seconds to mention all the different drummers and kinda just skipped over everything post-2000. I'll still throw it in every now and then, but there are many rock docs out there that I would rather watch.
  • BinFrogBinFrog MA Posts: 7,314
It was supposed to be a little watered down. It was a documentary for everyone, not just hardcore fans. Hardcore fans were placated by the bonus DVD discs and the book.

:corn:

    This is a classic rant..

    Well played sir!
(Funny how his prediction quite possibly mirrors the Tides Cd rumours!)

    Absolutely.

I just re-read it again. Couldn't been more true or indicative of how I feel. It's simply fucking brilliant.
  • I remember when they were making the documentary, Cameron said that they had over 24 hours of footage that haven't been seen. I'd seriously like to see that footage. Like backstage footage that they usually have, or them just goofing around or interviews.

I feel like Crowe "wants to be" considered a hard core fan but the best he could do was
Show "release" and "hard to imagine" from some recent shows (while their origin is 1992- 1994)
And bail on any hard work by quick stepping everything to "imagine in cornice" outakes..
Even the real decent bonus footage from the 1995 is kinda tossed in without an organized basis..
    He's a classic poser..

    To locked:

I could go my entire life without knowing about "Mike's rehab/pain killer addiction" and Ed's divorce. Show a little decorum. Perhaps Kim Neely would be a more suitable director for you?
