The waiting drove me mad.
Tom Stoppard, one of my favorite playwrights, was commissioned to write a radio play to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon.
Here are a few articles I found about it...

From Deadline.com...
Tom Stoppard has written a new radio play to mark the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon. Darkside, premiering August 26 on BBC Radio 2, is a fantastical based on themes from the album. The cast includes Bill Nighy, Rufus Sewell, Adrian Scarborough, Iwan Rheon and Amaka Okafor. On the night of broadcast, visitors to bbc.co.uk/radio2 will be able to watch a specially commissioned animation by Aardman to accompany the drama.
I'm suddenly feeling pretty fuckin' old, though... like some of you others I'm guessing!

I mean, people, in general, do not listen to an album from start to finish these days. And even if they do... they move on to the next release within a few months.
It wasn't like that in 1973. You basically had one option when you purchased music... vinyl. Sure, you could buy 8-track tapes back then... but, most 8-track players were installed in the dashboard of our cars, not as a component to our stereo systems. But, everyone had as turntable in 1973.
We had to listen to the records from start to finish because it was not that easy to keep replaying one song, over and over again. It could be done, but we were lazy (or stoned) and just let the thing play through. This exposed us to all of those tracks that never made it to the radio airwaves. We were young and our friends all had records... and everyone had the same records... so, when you went to parties, you'd hear the same music. We listened to 'Dark Side Of The Moon', over and over again... for over a year. I, personally, listened to it consistantly for about 2 years.
With that, the single, 'Money', would still be a radio hit single, but hardly anyone bought 45s back then. It made more sense to spend the $2.99 for the album and get a bunch of songs, plus the album cover and any other goodies they printed on the liner or extras they'd stuff in the cover, rather than spending $.50 and only get 2 songs, usually in a generic paper jacket (picture sleeves were the exception, not the norm, back then). Today, you're be able to buy 'Money' for .99 on iTunes, rather than spring 10 bucks for the album. Look at any album on iTunes and see how many 'hits' are sold, compared to the other songs on the tracklist.
Speaking of the single, 'Money'... would it have even been a big hit today? I mean, listen to its odd time signature. Not easy to dance to, is it? Except during the guitar solo. Would it have been a huge success today.. as it was to the stoner kids in 1973? Hard to say.
Anyway, it is a landmark record that has to be in the top 10 list of any serious rock music fan... regardless of whether or not you like the record. It was a monster album that has made long, deep mark on the musical landscape. I believe it is possible to surpass 'Dark Side'... but, the way technology tends to shorten our attention span... I feel it is highly improbable.
Hail, Hail!!!
