Marc Jacobs' 'faux fur' garments actually use the coats of Chinese canines: Humane Society report
It's a faux fur fakeout — Marc Jacobs jackets being sold at Century 21 department stores actually contain dog hair.
Even if the labels say otherwise, the “faux fur” garments sold by the retailer are made with the fur of cuddly Chinese raccoon dogs, a breed that’s often skinned alive for its soft coat.
Disgusted shoppers found that some of the 'faux fur' garmets are made from dogs.
Tests arranged as part of an undercover probe by the Humane Society and state Assembly member Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) identified various items hawked by Century 21 as containing real canine fur, disgusted shoppers found out Thursday.
“I think that’s horrible, because I don’t believe in wearing real fur,” snapped tourist Kayla East, 23, of Toronto, as she shopped Thursday at Century 21’s popular lower Manhattan outlet. “I would really be upset if I purchased something that said it was fake, and it was real.”
Designer Marc Jacobs, a noted dog owner himself, has used canine fur in his garmets, according to a Humane Society investigation.
The controversial clothing included purported faux fur-trimmed jackets from dog-loving designer Marc Jacobs, according to the Humane Society and Rosenthal investigation.
Tests indicated the fur on the “Marc by Marc Jacobs” coats instead came from the raccoon dog. Investigators said the real fur, generally of a low quality, is actually cheaper than the fake stuff.
Investigation at Century 21 Department Store: unlabeled and misrepresented fur, including raccoon dog on Marc Jacobs jacket sold as 'faux fur.'
“Anybody who doesn’t want to buy animal fur should be very angry that a product that they’re trying to avoid is being misrepresented as a product they may want to buy,” said Pierre Grzybowski of the Humane Society’s Fur Free Campaign.
Designer Jacobs famously owns a pair of bull terriers, and sports a tattoo of the dogs on his shoulder. He has previously come under fire from PETA from his work with real fur designs.

Three photos of a Marc by Marc Jacobs jacket that was advertised online at 'faux fur,' but upon receiving was labeled 'raccoon,' and after laboratory testing, was confirmed to be raccoon dog.
The Jacobs jackets were sold online, while clothing like the “Trust Fund Baby” sweater and the “Save the Queen” jacket was purchased at two Manhattan locations during the five-month investigation.
Shopper Caroline Viaud, 27, of Paris, said it reminded her of meatballs tainted by horse meat that were sold at some Ikea stores.
Raccoon dogs are seen at a cage in Tokyo's Ueno zoo Saturday, May 24, 2003. Researchers from the University of Hong Kong examined 25 animals representing eight species in a live animal market in southern China and found the SARS virus in all six masked palm civets they sampled, as well as in a badger and a raccoon dog.
“We don’t know what we buy anymore,” she griped. “It’s disgusting.”
Viaud, who was wearing a coat with a fur-trimmed hood, said it featured fake fur — or so she hoped. Jacobs did not respond to a call for comment, but fashion expert Phillip Bloch predicted fans of the designer would fur-get about the flap.
“He’s a good guy; he’s philanthropic, he cares,” said Bloch. “It’s upsetting to anyone to have that story come out. But Marc didn’t go out and kill the raccoon dogs.”
Century 21 issued a statement pointing the finger at the manufacturers, although state law — introduced by Rosenthal — requires labeling of all garments as “real fur” or “faux fur.”
“Century 21 does not create garment labels, the manufacturers do,” the retailer said.

This has been going on for years but hopefully this scandal will bring more attention to this problem. If you wear fake fur you're part of the problem. :nono:

Not fun to watch but important. I'm posting Reznor's video on my FB with this warning, :"this is not pretty". Thank you for taking time to do this, Trent Reznor.
WTF is wrong with these people? Disgusting. :(
Not that this isn't horrible enough but some of those animals are actually peoples pets that were stolen from them.
Yeah, that part really got to me. I won't say what I was thinking about those people who were involved in this cruelty... but it wasn't nice.
Whether its a pet, a stray or in the wild, all animals feel the same pain.
I recommend all that read this post the story on their Facebook.
Thanks to the OP for letting us know.

That's sad. Things do get spread around more today because of the internet. Maybe if we all post this to Facebook as CJMST3K suggested it would... what is it called- go viral? I posted it on my FB but no replys yet. I think it may have hit close to home for a few of my FB "friends". They'll either get the point or I'll get "unfriended"- either way is OK but I hope they get it.

I've seen much worse. And I still stand by my original quote.
F'n ex junkie telling me about not wearing fur. Where was he when the commerical "this is your brain, this is your brain on drugs" was going around?
