:?
They named him Jihad?? :fp:

Thoughts?

They should not be in court, and should not have been charged. But holy shit, what a bunch of weirdos. Really? She put no thought into putting an "I'm a bomb" shirt/"My name is Jihad, My birthday is 9/11" shirt on her kid? I don't think so.
Knowing the French, she's not going to get along so well in France anymore.

I don't know... I wonder if they sell "I Love Hitler/My birthday is April 20th too" shirts as well? Because that is my birthday, I've always really wanted to flaunt that I share it with Hitler. :fp:
The uncle who had the shirt made is a FUCKING IDIOT.

I remember reading an article in the run up to the war in Iraq that the most popular name for male children in Pakistan after 11 September 2001 was 'Usama'. Yeah, the same Pakistan we chose as our 'ally' on the 'War On Terrrrrr'.
    ...
as for 'Jihad'.. i work with a guy named 'Jihad'... a very nice guy. The name has several meanings, the one we know from watching T.V. (Holy War against Infidels... where Infidels meaning anyone who goes agaist the word of God... and yesm the same God of the Hebrews) and a second meaning, any vigorous, emotional crusade for an idea or principle.
Of course, there is the spirit of the naming.... the Jihad I know was born in the 1950s... this kid was this decade. It think the place in time falls into play... but, yeah, not the smartest move by the parents. Just name the fucking kid 'Cody'.

Putting a sign on him that says he's a bomb and then with his name and 9/11 on the back doesn't exactly settle my mind about the family's intentions either.

I feel bad for the kid... because the kid doesn't fucking know what it means.

Like, it's funny when you see someone wearing a shirt that can't read what it says... like, you know, the Mexcan guy wearing a shirt that says, 'Little Princess' on it.

Yes, I feel terrible for the kid. His parents have actually probably really fucked up his time at his preschool at the very least. He will likely be quite the enigma at any school he goes to now for the foreseeable future, and parents won't want their kids playing with him, etc etc. What a dumb bitch that mom is.

You know, I'm starting to think that Iceland's policy of choosing a baby name from an approved list maybe isn't looking so bad at this point in time.

About the name itself, true. Context is important - big difference between choosing the name 60 years ago vs. endowing it on your kid who was born on a...sadly infamous...day.

whilst it's obviously offensive, in poor taste, etc, it remains that they have the right (or they ought to according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) to name, dress and say whatever/however they wish, isn't freedom and human rights the whole point?
I don't mean to offend anyone, a lot of what I say should be taken with a grain of salt... that said for most of you I'm a stranger on a computer on the other side of the world, don't give me that sort of power!

I actually know a Muslim guy who was born on 9/11 (in the 70s or early 80s), and he was PISSED when 9/11 happened (i mean, aside from the main reason him and anyone was pissed). It's tainted his bday forever. He sure as hell wouldn't advertise it on a fucking shirt.

That's not really how it works in France.... although she might win in the end, it's certainly not a given there.

And I understand that but nevertheless International Law trumps domestic and surely she could take it to the European Commission on Human Rights if need be. My point was less that she will get off and more that her arrest is completely illegal

I am not a lawyer, but I'm not under the impression that it quite works that way with these kinds of cases.

The story's not new. We got it on the news a few months ago.

To me, this family knew exactly what they were doing. It was provocation, if not (and I don't think so), they're just "Joe Sixpacks"
  • your move nowyour move now Posts: 1,165
Whether it does or will work that way is a completely different question to whether it should, which is all I was saying. Every country in the world breaks International Law on a regular basis, but for all sorts of reasons (Social, economic, political, etc) nobody does anything about it.
The European Commission does give her somewhere to go, those of us outside of Europe don't have an equivalent, but whether she would go there or it would have the desired and legal effect I don't know, (ie I agree with you about the workings, I just meant that this sort of ''crime" contradicts pre-existing laws and is a scary comment on the direction in which the world is headed)

Whether they were provoking or not is irrelevant in terms of the law

Granted, France has different laws than the US, but to me, freedom to express yourself *edit - within common sense and reason* should always remain in place.

I, in turn, have the freedom to call someone (or quietly find them to be) a fucking idiot for how they choose to express themselves.

(the legal side of this too strikes me as over the top)

Seems to me that she just wanted some attention, and now the courts are giving her that attention.

When I read the headline I figured this was a French woman living in the U.S. I didn't figure the French for the type to have 9/11 sensitivity issues.
