It appears to be Asian Roman Catholics that are driving the spike in elephant poaching.....ivory for fancy crucifixes and such.

The Chinese are more interested in rhino horn, pangolins and tiger penis.

  • Ah yeah the days when you could kill an elephant and use the whole body to feed a village. No wait that is the whale or something like that. Anyway, isn't there faux pas ivory that can pass as the real thing?

  • I remember once being a part of a campaign to stop the slaughter of baby seals. Years later, I still have co-workers who indulge in poking fun at me about it and of course -- I poke back. But I'd say the reason it's still on their minds is cuz their awareness was raised a bit. An awareness about something that happens 1000's of miles away from us but yet, this boycot was of McDonalds; a primary purchaser of Canadian fish. In turn, this movement brought the neccesary pressure on the Canadian Fish Ministry who eventually enacted a ban on the clubbing of baby seals. Funny how the wheels get oiled.
The newly affluent Asians need to raise their awareness some & of course -- a bit of pressure would'nt hurt.
