On the surface this sounds good BUT notice they say they are suspending for 2013. This sounds like an army retreating long enough to gather new arsenal and device new attack strategies. Sorry to put a pessimistic bent on the story but I think "wait and see" might be a worthy viewpoint here. I truly hope this extends beyond 2013.

    You’re not wrong.

“Our decision to pause in 2013 will give us time to ensure the readiness of all our equipment and people,” said Marvin E. Odum, president of Shell Oil Company. He said Arctic offshore drilling was a long-term project that the company would continue to pursue.

The company’s two drill ships suffered serious accidents as they were leaving drilling sites in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas last fall and winter and are being sent to Asia for repairs. Shell acknowledged in a statement that the ships would not be repaired in time to drill during the short summer window this year.
SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.

  • No doubt they will work to build arsenal for the next round, but public pressure (mobilized by various active organizations like Greenpeace) on government and on Shell contributed to forcing them to "pause", at least for now. That is a huge victory in itself.

That is encouraging, candleofthought26-- encouraging to know that supporting such groups is making some worthy progress.

For sure, so encouraging to see that individual people coming together have power - the power we're led to believe is out of our hands. This kind of pressure would not come about if single people, you, me, any one - didn't take part in these big causes. Shows the small things one person does makes a huge difference.
