who controls what? ... is the media responsible for giving what ultimately the public wants or is the public responsible for rendering media a corporate shill!? ... i'm not too sure ...
I don't even watch the News any more....I used to read the paper everyday at lunch but can't support the News Paper anymore as they print only opinion.

While I love Amy Goodman, and believe she is one of the very few true journalists out there shaking up the static, the media will never be what she wants it to be. That media is a media of the past, and is now and will probably forever be corporately (and governmentally) owned and run.

Good question. But the news used to be a public service, not a money maker. It didn't rely on any incoming money when Kronkite was reporting the news. Now that it gets network corporate dollars, the media has become biased and circus related.

Amy Goodman, fellow idealist!
Amy, YOU ROCK!
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

As a related aside, one of the top new stories this morning was Ben Affleck shaving his beard.
Seriously?
It's a bit silly to rail on "the media" for not reporting news and then admit you get your news from a place that thinks Ben Afleck's beard is something worth reporting.
Where do you get your news? Because "the media" is pretty much every newspaper, radio, tv network, Internet and carrier pigeon.

It's like railing against air.
Local news, cable, online. Probably not so far as where you and others get your news.
Are all of your - or anyone else's - sources pristine? No stupid entertainment shit included?
(here come da Judge!)
I'm OK with my sources of information; doesn't mean they don't toss irrelevant and stupid stories in the mix.
And it's really NOT silly to rail on the media; most have an agenda. Surprised you focused on that one point.

chomsky has done great work exposing or discussing this issue. All news, or news in the current paradigm is used to satiate and dope the masses. If they focus on Paris and Britney, they arent going to be pissed off about the fact they cant pay their rent and their son is being sent to die in Afghanistan. But it extends beyond ABC News Tonight or Fox News. It also involves sports, and music, and hollywood, and movies. As long as Joe Blow is angry about the Celtics losing last night, or focused on some Michael Bay film, then its less likely they will be worried about other more real issues. News has been like that for awhile. There are few journalists of integrity. Few willing to go above and beyond. And much of what exists in society, whats currently happening, isnt even questioned. Stocks and banking are discussed as if global hegemony and globalization and capitalism are the only options and are not even deserving of being questioned.
And we see this played out often. Compared to the Vietnam war, the amount of actual war violence we've seen on tv has been practically nothing. Since 2009, you'd think day and night we'd see intimate and gut wrenching personal stories of people who have been foreclosed on, lost their jobs and homes and livelihoods in the great recession. Instead we focus on Michelle Obama's hairdo.
I dont think this is necessarily new. I just think those in power have gotten better at manipulating the media, and the media seems much more willing to sit back and cow tow to those in power. After all, if you call Obama a war criminal, its unlikely you will be invited to the Press meetings at the white house and its unlikely you would even get much access. Reporters have become friends with candidates. Often times you'll see candidates for President laughing and joking with reporters. Which shouldnt happen at all.
Mostly I think modern society is filled with daily horrors, long days at work, bosses that suck, jobs that are meaningless. Most people dont want to come home and see dead bodies of Iraqi's on tv, or hear about their neighbor losing his house. They want to relax, have a beer and watch mindless television. And that makes sense in a certain way. I think most Americans, if they are conscious, feel powerless, and like they are being taken advantadge of and nothing can be done about it. And this is a legitimate feeling. We have a 2 party system, both are corrupt, but how can I or you possibly change it? So people do nothing and end up just throwing their hands up and voting for the evil of two lessers and thats it.
and its funny you mention ben affleck, because although its obvious people report on stupid tabloid reports about him, but he's one of those guys like Sean Penn, or Clooney or Brad Pitt who have used their celebrity to shine lights on issues they deem important. The subject and topics raised in Argo no doubt was a huge reason why Affleck even signed on to direct it.

She sounds like a politician to me, saying how it should be but not the how to make it so.
its not her job to tell us how to do it. Thats OUR job. Amy is anything but a politician. She does her job by reporting the real news, news that the mainstream media doesnt cover.

I can't watch the video from work, but I have close to zero trust in what the media reports to us.
(see NBC and its various incarnations re selective editing)
Bias has (or at least, should have) no place in reporting.
No slants in the writing, no eyerolls from the person delivering me the story...NO AGENDAS.
I don't give a shit what they personally think. All I want is the truth!

Pay attention and you'll notice that all media is centered around entertainment, not news.

It's not like I don't read "stupid entertainment" much but nothing that would consider Ben

Yes. "The" news paper.
There's only one. And it doesn't ever report news. Just opinion. That doesn't feed your own special brand of... not sure what word to use.
Nothing that would consider Ben....what? Newsworthy? Beard-shaving-worthy?
Stupid entertainment is all over the place - no room for high roads as that realm is a level playing field.
Hope you can clarify (preferably sans snark :P ).

Me reply without snark.
Yeah.
That's going to happen.
One day.
My point is that if you're reading news papers or websites that talk about Ben Afleck's Beard, I hope you have more than just that as a news source.
I just like to revel in the idiocy that is all around - and not just in the media.
