So lately I've been listening to tons of Lanegan... And something occurred to me... How does he write his songs??? I've never seen him or heard of him playing a guitar or any other instrument while singing... However, I vaguely remember an interview where he may have said he writes stuff on guitar and piano but I forget... Does he play these instruments (or at least guitar) and write the songs, and just choose not to play and sing live? Kinda puzzled

He definitely plays guitar. I think he's listed as 'vocals and guitar' on a few of his albums - I'm pretty sure the Winding Sheet cd booklet says he plays on 3 songs (Wild Flowers, Woe and one other) but I'm not sure if the other cds list specific songs.

I've seen him live 9 or 10 times and he's never played guitar so maybe it's something he prefers not to do. He's really intense and rarely moves from his "one hand on the mic, the other on the mic stand" pose so maybe playing would detract from his intensity.

  • He does play guitar but never on stage. He barely seems comfortable singing let alone playing an instrument too

I've seen him live loads of times (solo, with Isobel Campbell, with QotSA, with the Soul Savers and with Dulli in the Gutter Twins....) and I've barely seen him move from the mic let alone play a guitar!

He MUST play something though; he's got to many writing credits not to.

He is, though, one of the coolest people in music. Hands down.
