L.A. is a huge place with not-so-great public transit, so, if possible, spend the extra dough to stay in a hotel near Westwood/UCLA.

There is an airport bus that arrives/departs from Westwood on a regular basis.

Westwood is a small area adjacent to UCLA, and it is full of restaurants/shops/movie theatres/bars. Also, the Wilshire Blvd. bus is close-by, so you can get to Santa Monica and Beverly Hills quite easily.

I always find that having a good home-base when I travel makes things easier.
