What's the deal with the "X's"

When people say there number is 390-XXX? Is knowing someone's exact number really gonna hurt? I'm actually being serious this time!! What's the big deal? Someone help me out! It has always confused me?

    Yeah, I've always wondered this too. It's not like, I don't think we can actually gain anything by knowing people's full number but then, yeah I only remember my 1st three now, oh shit, I've forgotten them too 449or469XXX I think.

    I thought this thread was going to be about people had started signing their posts with xx like letters or something, showing how much we all LURVE each other!!
