The Doors - UR Favorite Work?

Song, Studio, Live Performance or whatever...

Live in Pittsburgh May 1970 is pretty much perfect in my opinion.

There is a medley of sorts in the middle - Mystery Train, Away in India, Crossroads Blues. This is one of my favorite pieces of music ever. When you consider what was going on in Jim Morrison's life at this time while listening to this you can really feel the man's pain. He was at a crossroads; jail or split. He split. Don't know if he would have ever come back from Paris anyway.

There is also The Soft Parade tag in When the Music's Over which is great.

It's cool too because Roadhouse Blues is pretty new at the time and the audience doesn't cheer when the song starts, but a little later, I bet that is when Jim Morrison walks out onto stage.

I just love listening to this show...if you haven't heard it give it a try!

Oh yeah, at the very end there is a quintessential Pittsburgher who addresses the audience, it's a real nice touch.

The Doors are one of those bands that have songs I love and songs I loathe. There is only one album I can listen to front to back, and I love it, which is Strange Days. "You're Lost Little Girl" might be my favorite Doors song.

The Doors might be the only band where one of my favorite albums is a Greatest Hits. The reissue of Greatest Hits in '96 with more tracks. It was the first Doors CD I bought, and I still have a soft spot for it even though it's now redundant in my collection. It's a pretty good overview and the live version of Roadhouse Blues I loved. Where does that version come from? I want to say it's from Boston, because the "Astrology Rap" that comes after the song is from Boston 1970, but the song could be from anywhere I guess, because they tacked it onto the back of Roadhouse Blues, where on the actual concert that occurs after Five To One.

I recently have a lot of love for Riders on the Storm, the studio version. Such a freaking great song!

I couldn't listen to them all the time, but every now and then I just have to :)

Me neither, I usually have to be in the right mood for them. But when I'm in the right mood, I have to listen to them because nobody else has that sound, for better or worse. I love Robbie's style so much, but he often takes a backseat to Ray's keyboard work, which is my main hangup. I'm just not in the mood for all that keyboard and piano sometimes. He's very good, just not always my sound.

I am usually in the mood when I'm piss drunk. My first three cd's were Morrison Hotel, LA Women, and Back in Black. I remember for a few reasons: I got them all at once by chance, I was 17 and cd's were new and scarce, my Dad (Vietnam Vet) dug the doors. His favorite song was Shaman's Blues.

The keyboards do get in the way, I agree. But, the live shows have a celebration vibe because of them. Robbie is so good!

Anyone who has only listened to the compilation live albums should really get one of these newly released full concerts. If you can put the headphones on or on a long drive just sort of zone as if you are in the audience it is quite a trip.

I suggest the Pittsburgh show start to finish. But I'm from Pittsburgh and have a vivid memory of the Civic Arena and when I imagine the doors in that building it is really f'n awesome. At the end of Mystery Train Jim Morrison gives a "wooo woooo" with his full voice and you can hear it echo in that arena, wow just wow.

  • Studio-album-wise, tough to match their debut album imo. 'Waiting for the Sun' would be my #2 (their 3rd). And I really like the music (with a bassist....yaaaayyy!) on 'An American Prayer'. Their uber-psychedelic material I enjoy over their more standard blues stuff. Btw, They have a box set out now of the first 6 Doors albums (ones w/ Morrison 12 circles at 45 rpm). Everybody is jumpin on the big box set bandwagon - The Who and now Sabbath will release a box of the Ozzy years LP's.

One of my earliest memories is singing along to Roadhouse Blues with my dad in the car, so that song always holds a special place for me.

  • Songs:
    Peace Frog (groovin' tune)
The Soft Parade ("... there was a person there who put forth the proposition that you can petition the Lord with prayer...")
Riders on the Storm (awesome intro)
    The End (dark and deep)
    Love Her Madly (quintessential Doors)

A great band and the classic tragic rock and roll story.

The Doors were my favorite band until PJ came around. Morrison Hotel is my favorite album. LA Woman a close 2nd. Definately think they were getting better and better. Wish Jim would have stuck around for a couple more albums. Jim was definately a rock star!

Their self titled debut album rates as the single greatest debut album in the history of rock and roll, IMO. So that one.
  • "L.A. Woman" is probably my favorite Doors song
