I hope they do a good job. The question is also whether "we" as the audience will accept anything that was not originally part of the concept, or if we would prefer it is left alone with no stories ever again.
I was surprised at how well an old franchise like James Bond was resurrected with an amazing reimagining with Casino Royale, which had a much different feel and grit, but made it much better, so I'm looking forward to seeing what the new Star Wars will look like.
IMO, George Lucas is/was best with films when he didn't have access to digital filming techniques. The newer Star Wars and Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull were nowhere near anything he did in the 70's and 80's with analog tape and physical models. Seeing JJ Abrams' work on Super 8 makes me think he can pull off a classic feel, while embracing the technology that is used today.
