Of course she has the freedom to do what she wants. But the expectation of the job being a former First Lady is to show up for a five minute inauguration ceremony. I guess I'm not sure what you're bothered by about this? She didn't choose a life of politics and decided not to just go along with it because of traditions. It was more disgusting to watch Biden welcome Trump in like everything was normal. I applaud Michelle for saying no. Melania often doesn't show up for things, who cares. Quit spending so much time on the fringes, most normal people don't care about these things.

Michelle didn't attend Carter's funeral, apparently, due to scheduling conflict while on extended holiday vacation in HI. Is it a story? Sure, I guess. Does it matter? Not to me. President Obama was there to represent. Would it be a story if Melania skipped? Probably.

She didn't attend Trump inauguration #2 for her own reasons. We can all speculate what they were. Personally, if it were me, I wouldn't attend based on "everything Trump," that she, her family and the country has been through.

Speculation of problems in marriages, illness, etc is normal, unfortunately. It's not any of my business and I don't care, but clicks and eyeballs...

The outgoing President refusing to attend the inauguration of his successor (first time since an ill Wilson stayed indoors 100 years prior) is not in any way shape or form the same as a former first lady from 3 terms prior not attending an inauguration. And you know that.
