FUN. - Some Nights

Am I the only one on these boards who thinks this album is actually really good?
It's kind of strange; the intro song reminds me of some kind of cross between Pink Floyd's The Wall, Bohemian Rhapsody, and a Broadway musical.... The album really reminds me of a kind of opera, actually. But anyway, I think it's a really cool album. Different and definitely FUN. It's not what I would normally go for... It even occurred to me to feel like a goof for liking it, but then I remember how stupid that was. I think it's a really good nominee for album of the year and best pop vocal album (although I think Blunderbuss should win album of the year, and "We Are Young" was nominated for song of the year, and I think it should have been Carry On instead). Not that I give a shit about the Grammies, but still.

The album was really well produced on vinyl too. It sounds great, and it came with a CD embedded in the album jacket, inside the gatefold, which is a pretty good idea.

I could do without those parts on the album where they decided to distort the vocals in a few of the songs though.

:?: There are no periods between the letters, actually. Typo on my part. So your post makes no sense.

Also, your post is a little bit of j.a.c.k.a.s.s.e.r.y. ;)

 I think that guy (whatever his name is) has a lot of feeling and power in his voice, and he's unique. He could come off as bombastic, but somehow he doesn't, and pulls it off instead. Came up with something new, which is isn't easy!

Yeah it's definitely different, and anytime I hear a FUN. song I am immediately in a good mood, which is super awesome. I haven't really listened to any new 'happy' music since Mika's first record!

Exactly! It's makes me happy too. The theme of it seems to be about making it through hard times (and possibly is loosely based on a soldier who's gone to war??) and getting through it just by the force of your own will and positive thinking. It's a really uplifting album I think.

If you've heard the hits, then you have a pretty good idea of what the whole album is like. It has a lot of continuity for an album; comes off like a coherent collection of songs, if you know what I mean.

This was one of my favorite albums last year! Not too mention, they are amazing live and well....fun. I thought they were lame before I saw them live. The singer marches and bounces around on stage and you have to admit, he has a phenomenal voice. I've watched interviews where he says he'll get hammered before they go on stage. He also mentions Pearl Jam in interviews i've seen on how he respects them and looks up to them....

Haha, right?! I swear, every time Some Nights come on, I immediately crank it and sing along. That song will never get old to me. He does write some good lyrics too.

I thought it was one of the top 5 albums of last year. The guy can really sing, but I hate the use of autotune on Some Nights. When you have a good voice you don't need to use gimmicks like autotune. Reminds me of a combination of Queen and Rush.

Totally. That is my only complaint. They do it on another song or two as well. Can't even imagine what they were thinking with that. Not sure about the Rush comparison, but Queen for sure. I said to MissPennyLane that I hadn't thought of that, but clearly I did, since I referenced bohemian rhapsody in my OP.

Because of this thread I listened to the album on the way home from work. Yeah, it's awesome. :)

I watched Fun on SNL the other night, and the lead singer remind's me of a young Mick Jaggar,Look's Wise! But his music, lyric's,and voice remind me of a new age Paul Simon. Really,Really Good! :)

the beginning of the song Some nights sound very much like a Queen song. He sounds a lot like Freddie Mercury.

I tried listening to even their hits and they are way too much of a bad Queen rip-off for me to handle.

First album 'Aim & Ignite'= amazing
    Some Nights= autotuned disappointment

However, they have stepped up their game live and are really excellent and, well, fun!

Not for everyone of course. :) Don't agree about them being a bad queen rip off though. Yes, it's a similar style, but I think they've still managed to do their own thing.

  • I love the album. My husband gave it to me for Christmas, and I listen to it a lot in the car-always makes me happy and I feel uplifted when I hear their music.

I hate stations that do that. It's why I rarely listen to music on the radio. There should be a law against it. No station can play the same song more than twice a day.
