Bruce Springsteen has announced that Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine will join the E Street Band for the group’s Australian tour in March.
Morello will be standing in for Steven Van Zandt, who will be busy in Norway filming the second season of Lillyhammer. Van Zandt plays an American mobster hiding out in Norway in witness protection in the Netflix series. This will mark the second time Van Zandt has left the E Street Band since joining in 1975. In 1984, he quit the band during the recording of Born in the U.S.A. to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Nils Lofgren. Van Zandt rejoined the band when Springsteen re-formed the group in 1995.
Morello appeared on two tracks on Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball album and has sat in with the E Street Band on many occasions over the past five years.
Springsteen was last in Australia way back in March 2003 when he played just four shows – stadium concerts in Sydney and Melbourne, and a pair of arena gigs in Brisbane. Since then he’s released five albums and played nearly 500 gigs without setting foot in Australia. While this may be an album tour in support of new-ish release Wrecking Ball, given Springsteen’s long absence from our shores, perhaps we’ll get a retrospective gig from The Boss and his E-Street Band (Patti Scialfa, Garry Tallent, Roy Bittan, Max Weinberg, and Nils Lofgren).
