Families

One the things I enjoy most about the holiday season is getting together with family. Inevitably, when various family members get together, subjects related to current events come up. We don't always agree about some issues, but most often the conversation remains civil. On rare occasions though, some of those conversations have gotten ugly and when that happens, the choices are pretty much either get into the thick of heated and pointless arguments that settle nothing or walk away until things cool off. I prefer the latter.

Meanwhile, in the spirit of families and extended families of all kinds, a circle of friends, here's a really good one:

Funny how you can love your family, but not like some of them too much.

At this point in my life, I've learned with whom to avoid certain topics.

And oh what I would give to have some family back here with us - the ones who died too soon, and the ones who died after living a good long life.

    Regardless, I miss them.
  • Families -- the blood type -- you can never trade them. They are us, they are part of what defines us. It is one complexity unto itself but like the saying goes -- it's the tie that binds.

I think heated discussions add spice to life. I am never one to walk away from a good heated or out of control conversation about controversial issues! Fun times! Keeps the blood pumping and everyone on their toes. :) I personally do not have an issue with conflict. I think an hour-long argument over politics with the family sounds like a delightful and memorable holiday mement. :D Balance is key though. It has to be a camy that can move from that to complete harmony once the debate is exhausted. Luckily, my family can do that. We all understand what healthy heated debate is. It's another story if no one respects anyone else or takes shit personally.

Pretty interesting class... it's spending way too much time on marriage, though.

So answer me honestly- do you folks really enjoy the ongoing, seemingly endless gun-related threads that have occupied the AMT section of this forum since, oh I don't know, December 14th 2012? It's pretty much kept me away from here lately-- yeah, I know... boo-hoo. ...............

are you saying the AMT is like one big family? Cause if so, I want to be the crazy aunt who drinks too much, has way too much sex and wears all of her jewelry and accessories at once but still has really great taste in music 8-)

But no...I don't really like those threads...I don't mind the debate when it actually stays on topic, but I'm not really a fan of some of the needling and disrespect. [will shrug]

  • My family knows to keep their distance.

Short phone calls every few months.

I do not speak to my sister. Ever.

I spend the holiday in a remote, tropical place, usually Key West or Hawaii. I pretend it's not a holiday and I feel much better once it's all over and I can return to America unblemished by the reminder of... that whole mess.

Yeah, I think of AMT as a type of extended family. I suppose you could say that's stretching the meaning of the term quite a bit but it seems that way to me- at least somewhat.

Yes, all families need an eccentric! Eccentric women are some of my favorite people. You're in excellent company! :D

My frustration (and I'm well aware that's my problem and no one else's which is why the sarcastic boo-hoo roll eyes hahaha) over the gun threads is that there are so many of them these days I'm tempted to suggest we ask the mods to rename this part of the forum "A Revolving Gun" (bang bang, shoot shoot). Oh thank god for humor! So I was getting very frustrated by all this and getting to the point that sooner or later someone was going to tell me to go pound sand or I needed to go hide for a while. Well, it's winter and cave dwelling seems more comfortable than slamming my head in the sand on the beach. See my logic?

  • hedonist asks what IS normal and I'm certain it's not me.
If i don't get booted from AMT, I'd like to see a dedicated area for gun control myself.
Just wanted to drop in here and say thanks again Brian.

No problem, DP. Yeah, lets make "A Revolving Gun" a separate section of the forum so we can get back to discussing other issues on AMT. :)

"A Revolving Gun" - I like it!  I'm all for hiding out from time to time. I usually go play on AET for a while when I need to do that...it's sort of like the kids table at Thanksgiving...you can play and have a break from the grownups bickering

I dunno, Brian. I think as long as the guidelines are followed, people can say what they want on any subject, and those who want to reply can. There are many threads I don't read, many that I do and don't reply (or, I Churchill it :P ), and others in which I partake.

Sure it's easy to get fed up with periodic repetition, the in-fighting, the general unconstructive anger...when I reach that point, it's time to move on for a spell. Online, offline, it's just healthy to do so - at least for me.

Hope you're having a stress-free Sunday so far.

I've have a good day- thanks, hedonist,

Yeah stress is a killer. I'm working on going the other direction. Of course, as far as work week goes this is my Saturday night so it's been easy to do if you know what I mean.
