2011

433 murders
361 were shot
ONE person was shot with an "assault rifle"...

Three people were murdered with an automobile by comparison.

So I guess the "assault rifle" isn't really the weapon of choice when murder is the goal.

That is all. Continue to be distracted.

    Great. Thanx for posting that.
361 of 433 were shot... with a gun, right? Is that considered a 'majority' of the murders? How many were murdered by a car... 3? How about by a baseball bat... 1?
And how hard is it to get an assault rifle in Chicago? Easy or hard?

And look at the bright side... the murder rates have dropped since 1991 (did Chicago enact any type of gun control between 1991 and 2011).
    ...
And the odds are in your favor if you are NOT:
A Black or Hispanic Male between the ages of 17 and 35 with no prior arrest record and are not in a Street Gang that lives in Areas 1,2 or 4.

what you are saying is like saying "using c-4 is clearly not the weapon of choice when blowing something up is the goal"....

because there are so many other forms of explosive that can be used to accomplish the same end.

the gun is the problem. not the type of gun, ie assault rifle, but guns period.

however in chicago many slip on banana peelings, fall, smack head... then death. or

many in chicago flash others their small or bulky banana... this leads to laughter, sheer terror, or rage... many die from the flash of a naked ass banana shown to them. in fact many a banana flasher have been hung, burnt to death, fed to sharks in a chicago river or shot with high capacity machine gun clips.

i'll accept fart over banana showing any day. no need in the banana for me. others may feel differently than i.

According to the records... in 1991 there were 640 murdered by gun fire.
And if you look at Table 13 on pg.26, the numbers begin to decline around 1998.
in the 8 year period, from 1991 to 1998, there were 4,924 murders by guns (avg. 615.5 per year)... and in the last 8 years (2004 to 2011) the total is 2,889 (avg. 361 per year). A difference of 2,035.
    ...
My question is... what has changed in Chicago?
I understand there are a lot of varying factors, but what are those factors? More cops? Fewer gangs? Lower population? Fewer poor? More gun restrictions? Fewer gun restrictions?
    What?

Could have been as simple as an abortion 18 years prior, give or take

The Impact of Legalized Abortion on Crime
Steven Levitt of the University of Chicago and John Donohue of Yale University revived discussion of this claim with their 2001 paper "The Impact of Legalized Abortion on Crime". Donohue and Levitt point to the fact that males aged 18 to 24 are most likely to commit crimes. Data indicates that crime in the United States started to decline in 1992. Donohue and Levitt suggest that the absence of unwanted children, following legalization in 1973, led to a reduction in crime 18 years later, starting in 1992 and dropping sharply in 1995. These would have been the peak crime-committing years of the unborn children.

Last year, 2012, over 500 people were killed in the city. The city with the strictest gun control in the nation. Gun control does not work. Criminals do not obey gun laws.

BTW, the amount of people killed every two weeks in Chicago equals Sandy Hook. I guess the media doesn't want to point that out though given that the city had a total ban on handguns for 20 years and still makes it just about impossible to obtain one legally. I could get an illegal one in less than an hour. The media doesn't want people to know that gun control doesn't work, because it only disarms the law abiding, and leaves them defenseless.

The nation will never hear of it, I mean how many people really give a shit about some poor black kids, right?
  • usamamasan1usamamasan1 Posts: 4,695
Don Moran, president of the Illinois State Rifle Association, thinks new laws will not make a dent in the violence. The illegal guns are already out there. The people buying and shooting them with reckless abandon won’t even learn that the gun laws exist, let alone respect them.

I haven't said that. I don't believe felons or the mentally incapable should be allowed the use of arms.

You don't get it. My entire point is that you don't punish the law abiding.

    Wait... now, i'm confused.
I thought you posted those 2011 number to show that of the 461 murders in Chicago... only one was killed with an assault rifle. A plus on the side of assault rifles.
Now, you are complaining that the murder rate has increased by 39? I mean, what is the breakdown? How many of the 500 murders were the results of guns? How many the results of assault rifles?
Because, it seems like you'd be happy is zero or 1 were killed with assault rifles because it would further support your initial point.
    ...
    I think.

Washington, DC has similar gun laws to Chicago and they have continued to see a decrease in their murder rate. In fact, they look to be close to hitting an all time 50 year low. To every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

australia has very strict gun laws as well. and their gun injury and death rate is significantly down.

all it took was ONE mass shooting and the aussies acted.

we have had multiple mass shootings this year already, and nothing.
