2013 Suggestion Box

My suggestion: Restart this train. The level of conversation on this forum has dropped to the point where I personally see no purpose in coming here any longer. Maybe that's just my perception and I'm open to being voted out or duly chastised or even given a time-out. But if others here agree, maybe we can establish some level of adult interaction based on the parameters already established for this forum. I would suggest less name call and bating and over-reacting to things that offend us (I'm guilty of that). I don't know if I'm alone in feeling this way, but it seems like AMT has degraded to a point of banal bickering, attention seeking and game playing.

Right now I have 5 posts on the front page. You also have 5!

2 are non-political and they have recieved no responses. Happy New Year resolutions and Magical Forces

1 is anti-American "Who are we to think..." deals with our selfishness as a nation

1 is trying to understand Canada's founding....

1 is pro-American "Purpose of USA", however we are getting all kinds of tread here....i am listening!

So thats a diverse set of subject that seem to attract different people for various reasons.

However, I dont see New Years resolutions....so even when IM NON political and light hearted....i get nothing!

I see rigidity from one thread to another sometimes. These are fair threads that would never hurt anyone!

I believe that the train should have all walks of life....and i enjoy when people disagree!

Brian, I agree totally. This train has degenerated into garbage spewing pile of bile. I'm ready for a restart in the New Year. I suggested it in another thread but what about a book club? I'm up for reading anything!
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

AGENDA 21 will be a thought provoking read.

You come across as attempting to bait people. Are you really interested in reasoned debate because if so I am ready to discuss with you. Most of my friends and family are the complete opposite end of the spectrum from me politically, socially and religiously. Some of them I respect and value their opinion even though it may be wildly different than mine. I respect it because they have done research through reading, analysis and critical thinking and have simply drawn different conclusions than have I. I am ok with that and it is stimulating and offers me a chance to rethink my own positions. However, I have other friends and family members that employ no research nor analysis nor critical thinking and simply have their opinion. And they seem to make a big deal about how important their opinion is even though they have no concrete basis for their opinions. There is nothing wrong with feeling but there is little validity to these opinions if one does not understand how and why they have arrived at their conclusions.

Attempting to bait people? Isnt that your personal perception? I will go back and look at my 5 threads and see, cause Im pretty sure the New years and Magical Forces dont do any of that. Im also sure the subject of each one is to expolore answers.....I may be biased in favor of US in the Purpose thread, but who ever said I wasnt allowed to be biased? If one reader takes it that way, then they must be biased against it? Whos to say who's right and whos wrong. Also, If you could point out in these 5 threads where i did that, Id appreciate that. Couldnt I say that about many threads also? Hmmmm how do we solve this? Well in my New Years thread I said I would try to be even more empathetic to AMT! Im pretty sure people get pissed because they have super strong opinions and they dont like to hear mine! Its in their nature and therefore they think im baiting them! Im not! Its their perception!

Hey man I gave you my New Years resolutions. Remember to get drunker and fatter.

I'm new here still but people like humor in their lives, people don't want to talk about guns and shootings. People don't want to talk about bad shit, they want to laugh and like it or not people like arguing with others. It is fun.
I can't relate to what it used to be like around here but people need to not take this shit so seriously, have some fun and enjoy yourself.

I don't think you attempt to bait people. I've seen you show appreciation to people when they answer a thread on topic, even when it's a differing view from your own. I think a lot of your politics are on the other end of the spectrum from a lot of us on here...but that's cool...we'd have nothing to talk about if we all thought exactly the same. Initially I misread your enthusiasm as sarcasm, but I've since realized that was a misread on my part. I think you're a pretty genuine person. As I said in one of your threads a while back, I think most of us are working towards positive goals, we just have different priorities and different ideas about how to go about accomplishing those goals. Sometimes (ok most of the time) my opinion about things will be on the far spectrum from yours...sometimes I might react strongly to your views or opinions...but as long as we're able to have a dialogue I think that's fine. It helps me not to stay in my little box of likeminded people, and I think that's a good thing.

Yes, non-fiction that's mostly all I read as well. Maybe it's time to start a book club thread

Yes, I suppose that was my perception. Something you said in the USA thread, I believe, about others pointing out negatives about their home countries and then you started the Canada thread in response to some of the comments made in that thread. If I misinterpreted your intent then I apologize. As I said, I am ok with strong opinions and those opinions being different than mine but I've gotten really frustrated with the trolling that occurs by some on these threads. I will read your posts in a different light from now on :)

seriously though, perhaps we have gone to a more base humaness in how we respond to others.

So I suggest a concerted effort in practicing respect toward others.

I know it's trite but I like the idea of New Years resolutions. It's a good time for reflection and resetting our own agendas. I can't control other people's comments on here but I can control my response (or lack thereof) to them. Here is a suggestion for you Brian (and everyone else). Did you know that many of us are deficient in magnesium which correlates to issues with fatigue, anxiety, irritability and on and on. Read this link about how we modern humans have difficulty gaining and retaining magnesium because of soil depletion and mineral depletion in our water supply. I make an oil from magnesium flakes that is doing wonders for me!

Don't go Brian! I like your posts!
I think most of the topics you comment on or start threads for are extremeness important...especially regarding the health of our planet. Unfortunately, the only times I see it get ugly on the train is when mass shootings occur and maybe a few discussions about religion and/or God. We are a passionate bunch, and this shooting was one of the ugliest things I can remember since I've been posting here regularly. )oh, then there were the elections...so...two (three if you consider Colorado) very ugly things have recently come and gone. It will calm down here for a awhile I bet...

Oh and Happy New Year Buddy! :D

Cheers to that! Seems to be a knee-jerk thing lately.

I'd also suggest the use of the ignore feature, or save your post as a draft (and re-read it after the heat of the moment - chances are you'll either re-word it, or say fuck it and not bother posting it at all)...or just take a breather, for those who get off on - or can't help - inciting or overreacting.

Obviously, this place - like life - isn't all rainbows coming out of our ass, and shit happens personally, nationally, globally. But is it that difficult to be civil with each other?

    1) Remove the face palm smiley.
    2) Pick one smiley to be the sarcasm smiley, so people know it is sarcasm (I'm open to any suggestions as to which smiley this should be)
    3) Joke around a bit more
    4) More negative threads about Canada ;)

Each person is responsible for the atmosphere in AMT. ALL of you. It doesn't help to set oneself above others...we're all people. Following the guidelines set in place would go far in helping things.

Biggest thing one can do is to discuss the topic and not the other people. It's all just opinions. Opinions. Express yours politely and move on. It's also ok to read a thread and not post. It might be better for your BP, in fact.

New rule: Calling someone a troll is verboten...no more. Just express your opinion on the subject and leave other members alone.

We all have a new year and a clean slate. Use it wisely please.

    Thanks. :)
    Falling down,...not staying down
