I'm pretty much staying away from the gun threads because I've had my fill but I can't resist passing along this brilliant piece of logic:
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

I liked some of the comments on the story^^^: "When ping pong is outlawed, only outlaws will play ping pong."

I've lost a lot of energy advocating for gun control.
Duh. Yes. The gun homicide problem America faces is complex, but it is unique to America. And there is something else unique to America...
Every country has mental illness and video games... but not every country has such liberal gun laws. There HAS to be a correlation. To deny this is either: stupidity, stubborness, selfishness, or apathy. In my mind... all four leave plenty to be desired.
10,000 people per year dead by gunfire in the US
2008 2,947 children in the US died by gunfire
2009 2,793 children in the US died by gunfire
* 8 kids every day. 2012's stats might be skewed a bit given what happened last week.
Gun supporters... have your guns: just not bazookas, assault rifles and handguns. Why no moderation? Why is a rifle or shotgun- after a thorough background check- not adequate enough? The AR-15 can shoot 4-6 bullets in a second and 100 in one minute. Handguns are easily concealed and small to smuggle into public places. They are too dangerous in the wrong hands. You need to sacrifice these for the safety of all.
Americans with common sense and seeking change... be strong. Don't be held hostage by a 250 year old document that has no relevance in the modern world. I'm looking at a leadership book on my table that says, "If it ain't broke... break it." In other words, change is critical for anything to evolve, adapt, and survive in its environment.
People insisting M-16s are necessary in residential homes: your government is not going to become tyrannical despite the fear mongering some have proliferated (look how serious many took the Mayans' prediction... people will believe anything). Your neighbours aren't going to come and get you- and if they do... holding a shotgun at your door will likely encourage them to move along. Lastly... there are other fun things to do than shoot pop cans with 'cool' guns.
