I've been lucky enough to see most of my favourites but trying to think of the most talented is really hard. I think:

1. Marc Ribot (Tom Waits)
2. Warren Ellis ( Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds)
3. Matt Bellamy (Muse)
4. Ben Harper
5. Steve Vai (David Lee Roth)
Like a book among the many on a shelf...

Dublin 02 Arena - 22/6/10. Belfast Odyssey Arena - 23/6/10. London Hyde Park - 25/6/10. Berlin Wuhlheide - 30/6/10.
Manchester MEN - 20/06/12. Manchester MEN - 21/06/12

I don't know if Warren is one of the best I've ever seen, but he's certainly one of the most entertaining to watch.

Nice one, I saw him, Watt & Perkins together as 'Banyan' and also him with Watt opening for Primus one time. Could certainly add him to my list!

A tough one, but Derek Trucks is definitely one of them. I'll probably edit and add to this.

... and here comes that edit:

Steve Winwood - seen him with his own band and with Clapton, awesome keyboard player and equally good on guitar - he took Clapton a few times at their gig which is no mean feat.
Eric Clapton - yeah his records have been crap for years but he is seriously good.
    Rush - say no more.
Mike Portnoy - another great drummer, he and John Petrucci were far and away the best musicians in Dream Theater.

Question: Did Nels Cline play with Wilco around 2007? Want to say I have seen him too. I know Wilco has had multiple revolving door line ups with Maybe Jeff Tweedy being the only original member now. Not sure though. Thanks in advance.

He's been with Wilco since 2004. And John Stirratt and Jeff Tweedy have both been in the band since the beginning.

I'm going to read this as the best live performers I've seen (though many of these would be on my "Best Musicians Ever" list anyway) (All CAPS = the best of the best for me):

The Jackson 5 (cute, young, big fros era)
    Rufus feat. Chaka Khan
    THE CLASH
    The Pretenders (original lineup)
    The Kinks
    Talking Heads
    PATTI SMITH
    U2 (Joshua Tree and earlier)
    JEFF BUCKLEY
    UNCLE TUPELO
    Nirvana
    AFGHAN WHIGS
    STEVIE WONDER
    Cassandra Wilson
    REM
RAY CHARLES (probably the best performer, ever, anywhere)
    RADIOHEAD
    THE FRAMES

And, he's not quite on the level I put all the above artists on, but I've also seen 2 amazing Peter Gabriel tours (So, and the '97ish one with Blind Boys of Alabama on the tour) that had stunning staging (and excellent music too of course).

Another Honorable Mention goes to pre-2002ish The Kills. Had never heard of them the 1st time someone commanded that I see them, and we completely were blown away (probably ''97ish but I'm not positive when that was).

And the White Stripes, who I'd never heard of when I saw them open for Sleater Kinney '98ish. Blown away.
