Which Was Worse 9/11 vs The Newtown Shooting

To me it will the Newtown Shooting by far. One difference I can see immediately is right after 9/11 was the changes in the airline industry. Since those changes in the airlines 11 years ago we've had attempts to bring down planes but none that I know of have not been successful.

In the Newtown Shooting is the psychological effects/fears on children will be long lasting. Due to politics Congress I doubt will come together as quickly or in the future to make any changes to our current ineffective gun laws. The chances of this shooting happening to me are higher than any terrorists bringing down a plane again.

This kind of shooting sadly happen again with someone out there wanting top this tragedy that has just struck us in the US and around the world.

To quote Rats - they don't compare.

Ask the parent of one of the children.

Ask the spouse of one of those in the towers.

    Both horrific, with long-lasting effects.

Both have affected me in different ways.

Each are worse, in their own ways.
  • 9/11 was hours of dramatic horror worse than anything we have ever seen! We all knew that children were also dying there. However, the school shootings hit home in a different way, as we all can picture what the children were seeing right before they were murdered, which is evil and unfathomable!

  • Different. Terrible. There are no words for either.

Both were horrific events. I guess the only difference for me is that 9/11 was an attack on us, while Newtown was us attacking each other. It's far tougher to comprehend us attacking us, at least for me.

Both are horrific but 9/11 is considerably worse.

to me i think this one was worse.

the scale of 9/11 was too much for me to be able to process. they caught us with our pants off.

this is worse because of the age of the kids. they were at school, someplace that should be safe.

to me the most galling thing about this is that one segment of the population is in complete opposition to changing gun laws.

if your first response to news of this shooting was to be afraid that obama was going to take your guns, you are a terrible human being.

That one piece is a small segment, gimme - a sliver...and honestly, no different than those who want to ban ALL guns. Where are moderation and responsibility? With all of us.

(FYI, my first response was of the nauseous, what the fuck kind of sick fuck does this?)

From here, for now, if we're handing out awards for terrible human beings, I'd put it on the sick fuck of the year.

i respectfully disagree with the small "sliver" part. the nra has over a million members. i thought it was maybe as high as 1.5 million. if 60% of 1 million steadfastly oppose tightening gun laws, 600,000 people is not a small sliver.

my first response was nausea. i was physically sickened. my first emotional response was sadness for the kids and the families.

my other responses were "how could this have happened?" then "why did it happen?". i did not ask "who did it?" because it is really unimportant who did it. the fact is the act was committed. why glorify or spend time on the asshole who did it? that is what he wanted. the attention.

I think 9/11 was much worse. First, thousands died.

We talk about the psychological impact of Newtown. I agree that Newtown will stay with us for a long time. But I think 9/11 shook everyone's belief that we were all safe from attack in the USA. For a long time after 9/11 there was fear of new attacks and the whole anthrax scare.

I think it is clear there was a huge change in the mood and state of the country pre-9/11 and post 9/11. It is a totally different state of the country and the military.

I hope we can make our schools safer. Newtown is fresh in our minds right now, but Columbine and Va Tech were as well and are now only referenced when another shooting occurs.

I cannot choose which is worse...

they are both horrific with innocent children, women and men killed

  • I think Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a lot worse then either of the two you brought up. Bad things are bad things, there is no real scale to measure them by.

I'm sure if your brother, sister, dad, mom, aunt, uncle got killed by a drunk driver and went through the windshield and got run over by five other cars and you did not know one person from 911 who perished, that would be worse for you. I do believe.

The poison from the poison stream caught up to you ELEVEN years ago and you floated out of here. Sept. 14, 08

I'd like to clarify some when I compared these tragic events. Many precious lives were lost in both tragedies even the far reaching deaths in the wars after 9/11 however what I'm speaking of is the governmental response after 9/11 was powerful and swift. We had many changes that came to how we travel by air and continue to change as the years went by....shoes off....no liquids above a certain amount etc. We have not had a taking of a plane since.

As I see things going forward with the Newtown Shootings nothing of any consequence will be done or change until the next tragedy. I'd like to see some, if its ever possible from the NRA to compromise some that military style assault weaponry (rifles) need to be banned, no methods of purchasing rifles or any guns on the Internet, a background check on every weapon that can be bought and a waiting period of atleast two weeks.

I know this is wishful thinking of the NRA but this to me is why this shooting is worse in that not much if anything will be done or change to curtail these kinds of mass shootings in schools and elsewhere. In the meantime we live our lives till the next one comes across the news.

Don't believe one can be compared to the other. Horrifying apples vs. terrifying oranges.

Thanks Ill make the appropriate contacts to do something. We've had Columbine, Virginia Tech, a Congresswoman permanently disabled, Aurora, Newtown and many others and NOTHING was done. It will continue to be the same.

From the President I hear him use the adjective "meaningful discussions" and from the NRA "meaningful contributions" well after they are done not much will be done. To me that's why this will be worse.
