Was it in the 1990-94? beginning w/ other drummers Ten/VS/Vitalogy
1994-98? Jack Irons years end of Vitalogy/No Code/Yield
1999-2006? Matt starts Binuaral/Riot Act/PJ
2007- Present, getting into backspacer years, getting mellow on us PJ?

    1990-1994.

Performance-wise, there just simply is no comparison. Listen to a number of shows from 1993-1994 consistently. Like listen to 4 or five solid shows. Then listen any show after that. Absolutely no comparison. They were tight and on fire. No other years were they those two adjectives.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

  • 1992-2000. Those are the years that have the most replay value on tape. Eddie's voice was on point and Mike's tone was still good in those years. Also you didn't have setlists littered with terrible riot act (I do like the album but there is some shit on there as well), Avocado, and Backspacer songs.

    1998

    Well, my favorite year.

If they get their asses in the studio and finish this album and drop another shortly after, I'll change my answer to 2014 :D

'98 is indeed awesome. Love the Australian leg from that year!

1998 without a doubt. Record and the entire tour are both my favorites thus far.
  • 1998-2003
I believe they were tighter in 98 than ever before. Then the amazing 2000 Europe tour followed by the emotional 2000 US tour, and then the epic shows of the '03 tour. The early years had great energy but I do believe they got tighter later on, and Mike definitely got more areas to let it rip as time went on. Plus, I feel like their catalog was big enough earlier on to put on those epic shows.

wouldn't use the term "Prime" because that suggest that the best years are behind them...but my favorite years to date are '90-'94

Vs, Vitalogy and No Code were released during an amazing period. They'll never top that for me. Live I'd say 1998 and 2000 but they've made more effort with the setlists since the VFC tour.

I believe you are right on the point in my opinion...I have seen them every philly area or near since 1998! The 1998 and 2000 years were just great tours
The 2009 philly Halloween shows, although were epical in proportion, still not in their "prime"...the mid 90's/2003 were a coming into prime w/ the touring coming through and epic 5 album start

I agree with those who say 98-2003. Every era is awesome but the three tours that took place within those 5 years are just incredible. Not to mention 3 incredible albums.
  • LIVE - i would say half way through 03 - 06. They really started bringing back all the songs they had dropped since Matt joined the band, it was very exciting just to read set-lists etc. and the band was tight and eds voice was at a perfect balance.

STUDIO. I would have to say 96 - 03. I love the first three albums just as much but it wasn't until No code the band started showing how diverse and how much more there was to the band than angst and hard rock.

Kinda a big window, but I'd say 94-03.

I think 2003 is definitely the last year that can really even be argued although Canada 2005 was awesome. Anyone saying now has to be trolling.

I do think '06 was a solid year for them. Best after '03 by far, IMO.

  • I would say 1991-2003 they were in top form. That being said, even though they have lost a couple of steps since the late 90s they still manage to put on a good show. Nowadays it just seems like the cool thing to do is to dump on Pearl Jam post 2000 to 2003.

I like the "raw" sound of the early days.
I liked the more "experimental" sound of the mid to late 90s.

98-02 was the best sound from the band IMO. Ed still had a voice, the band sounded really sharp, Matt came on board...all was good.
