Most of us are guilty of this. At least a little. That's how I see it anyway.

Huh. Listening to a sweet acoustic version of I am Mine, and two lyrics hit home:

"the sorrow grows bigger when the sorrow's denied"

and, unfortunately (almost brought me to tears), "the innocence (innocents) lost at one time"

The anger is natural, needed, and can ultimately be healing...but to take it out on another - on each other - only perpetuates it.

    A different outlet is needed.

Thank you, Hedonist. That is what I was trying to say.

Not quite an outlet but I was thinking about the shooting, those before, all the crap in the world wondering if this kind of shit is it.. that's what we're heading for. Then stumbled on this (posted by a friend on FB)..

Made me think that there is still hope for humanity. Though it doesn't stop the tears when reading/hearing about what happened.

Same from here, all three points.

It's the flip-side of the incomprehensible, one I hope to never lose sight of - that goodness is still here, in those I know (many in this forum included), and in those I don't.

unfortunately i do not think anything will ever stop killing with guns. it is much too easy and efficient of a tool..

the only way for any stricter gun laws or any other changes can be made will be if millions of americans stand up and demand it...

kinda like how they demanded the return of the McRib...

    nope we don't.

as i said in the other thread, we will feel terrible and soul search for a few days, and then lindsey lohan will get in another car wreck or kanye and kim k will break up and we will be right back to where we were on thursday and forget how shitty we all feel today.

its sad, but it is true. the american people avoid our problems and kick the issues down the road. always have, always will.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this - but last night when I picked up my daughter from school (and hugged her so hard she told me to stop), we talked about what had happened. She's 16, so she's not a little kid. And I told her, no matter what, you have to believe there are more good people in the world than bad people. And yeah there are crazy freaks who do awful shit, but they're way in the minority.

    And maybe that's Pollyanna-ish, but I think it's true.

All the anger, Mike Huckabee saying it's because there's no God in schools - what the fuck is that?

Hug your kids. Be a good person. Give to others. We can do that. Yes, there's hope for humanity.

Whoops, I forgot. But I agree - in a week people will be back into Karsdashian obsession like they're the most important people in the world (one of the biggest mysteries in the world to me - why do people care about them?).

I don't know. Ya know, we say that American people are obsessed with media influenced everything, but I'm convinced that more and more of us are getting smarter than paying attention to what mainstream media is trying to sell us.

Morgan Freeman's brilliant take on what happened yesterday :

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

This is such a good idea, Jeanwah, as is Hugh Freaking Dillon's thread about remembering the victims. I have not and will not memorize the killer's name. I'm going to choose instead to remember Victoria Soto, 27, teacher, and memorize her name because it reminds me of a wonder poet, Gary Soto. Several of his collections are children's poetry books.

R.I.P Victoria Soto. I didn't know you but I will remember your name and wish your family well.
