Tour de France 2014 starts in Leeds

I think it is great news that my home city of Leeds will host the start of the 2014 Tour de France, with 2 days of racing in Yorkshire. There's lots of great places the stages could go, I hope they visit York at some point.

There will be some that scoff at the idea of the Tour de France being held outside of France itself (although its not exactly a new phenomenon, stages are held outside of France every year I think!), but I think it is fantastic that Leeds will be part of such a significant sporting event.

Any thoughts, agree or disagree?

I am really disappointed that Cav is out, even if it was his fault. He was under so much pressure to win that stage that he made a reckless move. I felt bad for him because of all of the pressure to win and to be out after the first stage. I know he has to feel terrible. The first two stages were certainly exciting, unlike they usually are. I enjoyed the stages in GB too. Looking forward to stage 5 and cobbles now.

    cobbles will be insane :D

I don't know much about any of these dudes, personality wise, but Cav was the ONLY sprinter i ever rooted for.

How can Jens always be so happy? This race is supposed to be hell. :))

I know. There were so many crashes on the pavement, I don't know if it was jitters or what. A lot in the roundabouts when you shift your weight from one side to the other.

Even with the crashes and cobbles, they averaged almost 30mph. Unreal.

    interesting Tour, so far.

Volunteers to help control and assist the crowds on race day, like the Games Makers that were used during the London 2012 Olympics. Over the 3 stages in the UK, there was 10000 Tour Makers. It was the first time volunteers had been used to help out on the TdF.

I was a Crossing Marshall. Basically making sure it was safe to cross the route and to close it down when any traffic as coming through. I was stationed in sector 1 which was in Leeds and was in the neutral zone about 1km from the start at the Headrow. Was really cool.

Other 'on-route' roles included Flag Marshall and Route Marshall. There was also 'off-route' roles which would include giving directions at places like train stations to the public to get to the route.

That's cool. My husband and I volunteered at the Tour of Missouri (US pro race - now defunct) one year. It was a lot of fun. So at least you got to see Cav before he crashed out.

You got a shot of Nibali's back side. Looks like he will probably be the winner this year. I'm still hoping that TJ VanGarderen makes a come back though.

That's Awesome!!! I would love to do that. How many hours before the riders came through did you have to start? How long after they leave does everyone clear out? Surprised that this is the first time they are using volunteers. The Flag Marshall guys are the ones that stand near the obstacles in the middle of the road right? I think those guys have balls..

We had to arrive at our check-in location at 5.30am and there we found out exactly what we'd be doing for the day - til that point all I knew was that I had an on-route role in the first sector on Stage 1. Got to our location for the race at 7am and then began setting up. Caravans came through just after 9am and the riders a little after 11am followed by the team support cars and coaches.

Yeah that's the flag marshalls. Would have loved that role!!

Ha! Just because I have a husband doesn't mean I'm not a dude. Right? :) Lots of states allow same sex marriage (which is a good thing IMO). But no, I am not a dude. I guess cycling is still mostly a male sport so easy for you to assume that.

I have seen nothing from main stream media on the TDF. Usually there is a mention here or there.

It's sad that this forum has declined to the point where a conversation can barely keep going :(

It's been a good tour. Nibali is comfortably ahead, so there's not a hell of a lot of drama, but the individual stages have been entertaining.

Nibbling is so dominant you might think he's doping....
