Paul McCartney will fill the role of Kurt Cobain when he plays with the surviving members of Nirvana at the 12.12.12 concert for victims of Superstorm Sandy on Wednesday night.
The former Beatle will join Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic on stage in New York to play a new song after secretly working with the pair.
A spokesman confirmed that Grohl recently asked McCartney to come along to "jam with some mates".
The former Beatle suggested they "just make something up" and found himself playing with Grohl on drums, bassist Novoselic and guitarist Pat Smear, who toured with Nirvana for the last six months of the band's career.
Kurt Cobain took his own life in April 1994.
McCartney said: "I didn't really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said: 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time?'
"And somebody whispered to me: 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it."
The Rolling Stones, Jon Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Kanye West will also play at the 12.12.12 concert for victims of Superstorm Sandy at Madison Square Garden in New York.

I almost don't want to write about this at all. I wish I could just let the headline linger. But I can't. It's true. Nirvana is reforming, for one night only, and Sir Paul McCartney himself will be standing in for Kurt Cobain.
According to the Guardian, McCartney has been secretly working with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear (Nirvana's late-period touring guitarist) who haven't performed with each other in 20 years. The quartet is slated to perform tonight at the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at NYC's Madison Square Garden, alongside the Rolling Stones, Alicia Keys, Jon Bon Jovi, and a shit-ton of other mega-stars.
McCartney is quoted saying: "I didn't really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said: 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time?' And somebody whispered to me: 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it."
Frankly, neither can I. Nirvana is my favorite band, but as much as I'm slightly offended by this news, it does make a bit of strange sense. According to Michael Azerrad, Kurt reportedly wrote "About A Girl" after spending an entire afternoon listening to Meet The Beatles! Plus, anyone who thinks that Paul McCartney can't scream need only listen to his grating rasp on "Helter Skelter."
No bullshit. This is real. This is really happening. This is the world we live in.
Just sit back and enjoy it. Or don't and read about it tomorrow.

all members of Nirvana are/were big Beatles fans, so it's not that odd. What would be odd is if he was singing a Nirvana song. Can you imagine the Wings version of Tourette's?

They haven't played together in 18 years, I think they've moved on.
They could do a lot more if they wanted to. They haven't beaten us over the head with posthumous material. Really only 1 song, and whatever various demos and vault stuff they included in the box set and re-issues. They've only re-issued two of their albums, released 2 live albums over the span of 16 years, and put out a few compilations. They're hardly flooding the market with their past.
Besides, it's all for charity and the victims of Hurricane Sandy, even if I did have a problem with this (which I don't) I wouldn't really have a legitimate gripe. People playing music to benefit those in need... preposterous!!! Although I will say that when I read the thread title I thought this was a prank.

Dave jamming with Zep makes alot of sense. I get that. But this, and Im a massive fan of both Nirvana and The beatles, this is a headscratcher.
The Nirvana and Beatles connection is more subtle. I dont think most people would make a connection between a Nirvana song and a Beatles song, but its definitely there.
Kind of feel bad though, Kurt would have loved to have been up there tonight jamming with paul.
Definitely makes you think, if kurt was still around, would Nirvana still be making albums? Would they have settled into elder statesmen of rock like Pearl Jam has? Would kurt even be in the music industry? Would he be making some odd blues or folk album?
Every other 90's rock act is currently reunited and playing old albums on tour, and making albums again. Nirvana was the single most important band of our entire generation. Certainly of the 90's. Its not like in 10 years they will be forgotten. Plus its not like Krist and Dave have been loafing about doing nothing since 1994. Both have blazed their own path in the last 18 years. From what I understand Dave inviting Krist to jam during the Wasting Light album was the first time they had played music together since 1994.
Michael Azerrad .. "Come as You ARe" ISBN# 0385471998.
"The genius of "About a Girl" began when Tracy asked Kurt why he didn't write a song about her.....It's an anomaly on the record and indeed in the entire Sub Pop scene- no one had written anything so unabashedly melodious and Beatlesque for the label yet.." page 100. By far the bestest Nirvana Book. Azerrad was writting the book with Kurt when he (Kurt) died. I really need a new copy, mine has had it.

no need to apologize, I wasn't actually referring to you, I was referring to all the news articles saying Paul is filling in for Kurt.

It was strange hearing Paul fronting a song thats so agressive. Maybe the most aggressive song he's done in years. His voice sounded pretty great, which is impressive given that he's what 70 years old?
No worries.
I had to rack my brains for a while, but I remembered an interview from years ago with Paul McCartney where he was asked if he could have been in any modern band who would it be, and he answered Nirvana:
