Well, I am not a girl but I live with one. She finds this very Fascinating in american women. She wonders just as you do..
I think it has to do with uncomfortable shoes. The higher the pitch, the less comfortable shoes.. just a theory..None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe that they are free.

It is indeed fascinating. I experienced that for example women in Finland are speaking in lower and deeper voices than I am used to. When I talk to my sister on the phone, we tend to talk in a higher pitch the closer we are coming to the end of the call. But this is nothing compared to some American women :P Once sitting in an electric in Toronto, I couldn't help but staring at a woman who was talking on the phone. Her voice was going up and down like a roller coaster
She entertained the whole train. I think it has to do with attention. Also, I noticed that Americans, and not only women, tend to end normal sentences with a lifting of the voice, lik in a question. This can be a way of assuring that your conversation partner is listening. So at least I read somewhere :ugeek:
Upon a little research on the topic, I came across this:

Interesting. The more I thought about this yesterday the more I witnessed that it seems all women do it.0 -
My Dad with us 4 girls and my Mom ... he'd always say ...
why is everyone talking way up here? ...
and motion with his hand.
I think it's from subconscious excitement and bonding.
He'd also wonder why every light was on in the house

Good point DS, and very true.
What's worse is when you get a room of at least 4-5 girls together. It's the most chaotic, fingers-down-chalkboard experience. They all talk at the same time, but as one is talking, the others talk louder. What's most amazing besides the fact that they actually get anything from that "conversation"...is how high the voices get. I made this observation with my ex. She didn't have a high pitch voice, but get her in a room of other girls and it def changed. Higher pitch voice and she also participated in the "I'm not going to let someone finish their though before throwing in my own". I find it all very fascinating.
Throw in alcohol and its truly like listening to a cat fight!!0 -
My friends joke that they can tell how much I've been drinking because the more I drink the louder I get. Girls by themselves - Normal
Two girls together - Louder and higher pitch
4-5 girls together - Screech-fest!
4-5 girls together drinking - Chaos!
4-5 really drunk girls - Enter mca47....0 -

You'd have to ask my friends...my memory's usually quite fuzzy by that point.
