I asked the concierge at a hotel in Winnipeg once if there was anything fun to do... The guy pointed to the lobby and said, "We've got some magazines on the table over there."

    True story.

Sounds like the worst concierge in the history of concierges.

in winter, Winnipeggers do three things: eat, drink, and fuck (pre-NHL lockout fuck would be exchanged for hockey).

    eat:
    1) VJ's Drive In. If Diners, Drive Ins and Dives crossed the north border, that hulk hogan wannabe would head straight there. Best burger and fries in town, hands down. I recommend the Double Cheeseburger. 170 Main Street.
    2) Baked Expectations - desserts and also good meals (try the triple decker grilled cheese sandwich) right in the heart of Osborne Village. http://bakedexpectations.ca/
    3) In Ferno's on Academy. Just took my wife there last night for her birthday. Fucking incredible. Acoustic band playing in the background, excellent food, ambiance, and the service was awesome. We both had the steak and prawns and it was dee-lish. http://www.infernosonacademy.com/

    drink:
    1) King's Head Pub - probably Winnipeg's best known and most loved authentic pub. Authentic pub food and beer, not to mention the decor. It's a "private" club, but that's sort of a joke. It's a one time fee of $5 to get in, and you get a little member card.http://www.kingshead.ca/
    2) Toad In The Hole - probably Winnipeg's best known and most loved.....wait. Ok, they're both awesome. This one is in Osborne Village, and King's Head is in the Exchange District (the place where a lot of period films of the early 1900's are shot). Also a great place to sit and relax and have a beer or bangers.
    3) if the NHL is back on, go to 4Play Sports Bar on Portage Avenue. Massive sports bar. Right across from MTS Centre. http://www.4playsportsbar.com/home

    fuck:
go to the Palomino Club on Portage Avenue. Cougars galore.
    http://www.palominoclub.ca/

    music/entertainment:
    1) head to Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club. Little dive on Main Street that is always home to some good blues music
    2) Limelight - awesome karaoke. you wouldn't believe it until you see it. the place is jam PACKED every weekend. and it's just down the street from me. call me up and we'll head down and sing some Hunger Strike. I'll be Ed.
    3) Earl's St Vital is a pretty happening place. Good eats and a ridiculous amount of big screen tv's for sports. Hottest waitresses in town too. Or the Polo Park location is good too.
    4) Rumor's Comedy Club - almost always a stellar comedian. Never seen a show I didn't leave with a headache from. Best nachos there too. http://www.rumorscomedyclub.com/
    5) Triple B's Billiards - 121 Scurfield Boulevard. Nice big pool hall.
    6) IKEA - it's brand new and the second largest in Canada.
    7) if you dig gambling, we have two big casinos: McPhillips Street Casino, and Club Regent.
    8) if you're into clubs, let me know. There's too many to mention, and I might not be the best person to ask, actually, as I've been out of the club scene for years (wife and kids).

any questions, just let me know. Too bad you won't be here in February. It's Festival du Voyageur. Everyone gets drunk and French and drinks out of ice cups outside and falls in the snow. It's awesome.

no problem. just because it's cold doesn't mean we sit inside and twiddle our thumbs. unless twiddling our thumbs was somehow made into a drinking game.
