Even though they sounded awful at Lolla in 2009 i'm gonna say Depeche Mode without A doubt!

I'm with pillowpants, but I grew up listening to Duran Duran...probably the first music group I ever remember hearing. My female cousin, 10 years my senior, is to blame.
DEPECHE MODE. (typed in all caps, so it's official)
I do like Duran Duran, I only really love a few songs, but the ones I like I LOVE. Girls on Film, Save A Prayer, and Notorious are golden. They are both very unique sounding bands though and very creative.

complitly different bands and style of music..
ill vote for DM if was between those 2 bands..but..
Duran Duran are unique in that pop style they playing...no question..
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
I have to go DM also. Duran Duran had some great songs, but I can't think of one great album. A couple of them have some good hits, but don't really flow as an album to me, and have quite a bit of filler. The Wedding Album might be the closest thing to a complete album, but it still has a ways to go IMO.
There are several DM albums that I consider really good in their entirety though. Violator and Songs Of Faith And Devotion stick out the most to me, but a couple of the earlier albums are great as well. The two singles collections (especially 86-98) are among my "must have" compilations.
I even have a soft spot in my heart for "Songs Of Faith And Devotion, Live", even though it has a long-standing reputation as being one of the most redundant albums ever, it was actually the first DM album I ever bought. I didn't see the "Live" part and bought it on accident because it had several songs I wanted on it.
"See a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down, a smack 'em yak 'em!"
A more appropriate comparison, to me, is Depeche Mode vs Tears For Fears
I see the appropriate comparison as Depeche Mode vs. Spandou Ballet and this one may be too close to call
A few more celebrity band competitions
Duran Duran vs. Culture Club or maybe even better, WHAM!
Tears for Fears vs, Simple Minds
Talking Heads vs. The Police
The Clash vs. The Gang of Four (Clash only because they outlived Gx4 (I think), especially with Strummer's output with the Mescaleros)
Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Fishbone
The Specials vs. Madness
Thomas Dolby vs. Gary Numan
Soundgarden vs. Alice In Chains
Concrete Blonde vs. every west coast band of the late 80's including GnR
GnR vs. Motley Crue
Ozzy w/ Randy Rhoades vs. Sabbath w/ Dio
Paul Simon vs. James Taylor
Post Genesis Peter Gabriel vs. post-Police Sting
Roger Waters vs. Pete Townshend
Robert Plant vs. Roger Daltrey (singing only, not songwriting or solo output, which Plant easily wins...)
Carol King vs. Rickie Lee Jones
James Brown vs. George Clinton
Diana Krall vs. Norah Jones
Black Crowes vs. Tragically Hip
Gordon Lightfoot vs. Jim Croce
Pearl Jam vs. The Real Mike Ditka + an Army of genetically cloned mini-Ditkas  :corn:

Speaking as a child of the 80's -- apples and oranges. DM was cooler, but every female I knew was crazy for Duran Duran for obvious reasons. I'll offer my expert opinion on these match-ups below.
A more appropriate comparison, to me, is Depeche Mode vs Tears For Fears

Duran Duran vs. Culture Club or maybe even better, WHAM! Duran Duran is better than either of these.
Tears for Fears vs, Simple Minds Tougher, but I'll go with Simple Minds.
Talking Heads vs. The Police Talking Heads. Just posted "Once in a Lifetime" to my Facebook page earlier today. First three Police albums were good, but Sting's later insufferability makes it hard for me to listen to any of their songs anymore, with the possible exception of "Can't Stand Losing You."
The Clash vs. The Gang of Four (Clash only because they outlived Gx4 (I think), especially with Strummer's output with the Mescaleros) The only band that matters, of course. The Clash get better, for me, with every listen.
Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Fishbone meh. I'll pass.
The Specials vs. Madness
Thomas Dolby vs. Gary Numan Thomas Dolby -- better music, better looking.
Soundgarden vs. Alice In Chains Soundgarden
Concrete Blonde vs. every west coast band of the late 80's including GnR I really liked her voice, not familiar with many of their songs.
GnR vs. Motley Crue Neither.
Ozzy w/ Randy Rhoades vs. Sabbath w/ Dio Didn't listen to either.
Paul Simon vs. James Taylor Paul Simon.
Post Genesis Peter Gabriel vs. post-Police Sting No contest. Peter Gabriel. "Security" alone clinches this one.
Roger Waters vs. Pete Townshend apples and oranges
Robert Plant vs. Roger Daltrey (singing only, not songwriting or solo output, which Plant easily wins...) Daltrey.
Carol King vs. Rickie Lee Jones Joni Mitchell
James Brown vs. George Clinton Had a chance to see George Clinton last night, but my son did not want to go. But I'd probably go with James Brown.
Diana Krall vs. Norah Jones Diana Krall
Black Crowes vs. Tragically Hip neither
Gordon Lightfoot vs. Jim Croce Harry Nilsson
Pearl Jam vs. The Real Mike Ditka + an Army of genetically cloned mini-Ditkas  :corn:
Depends -- just how short are the mini-Ditkas?
All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.
The Duran Duran boys were pretty good looking and still look pretty good, (Hello, John Taylor!) on account of them still being pretty young and aging well, but Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode has and always will be super hot, even after severe drug addiction. And a lot of Depeche Mode's music is really sexy. Just my two cents, as a lady..

i like the couples here!

"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
Very different bands, but DM hands down! They continued evolving in their sound and Songs of Faith and Devotion was a stellar 90s release IMO... another thing that excited my 'tiny inner soft-core goth' in the 90s was Adam Ant guesting on Northern Exposure - how freaking hot was he! He continues to be lovely to this day but HOW FREAKING HOT WAS ADAM ANT IN NORTHERN EXPOSURE!
Depeche Mode, for thread integrity.

I just dug up some Adam Ant videos a few days ago. He was hot.

Don't own any albums from any, but I like them about equally. I have 9 DM songs on itunes and 8 for DD, so slight edge to DM
