Show One
Set List

01. Don’t Be Shy-(Yusuf Islam)
02. Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town
03. Can’t Keep

(Ed discusses writing and the evolution of the next song)

04. Sleeping By Myself
05. Without You
06. Light Today

(Ed drops his beverage glass. His tech comes out to clean it up and Ed asks for a beer because it would be easier to hold. He decides not to play the next song on the set list. The crowd shouts requests but he can’t make out what they are shouting. He asks for them to do it one at a time or appoint someone. He picks a particularly loud person to make the request. I couldn’t hear it but Ed replies, “no man, you are way off base. We gotta pick someone else...Yeah, okay... I will play Van Halen.” He plays the intro to “Ain’t Talking ‘bout Love” for about 5 seconds then stops. He says, “I know what I am going to play.”

07. I’m One
08. Hurt-(Reznor)

(“That is a song I wouldn’t play every night out of respect for the author who is Trent Reznor. I lived in Seattle when there seemed to be an epidemic of people dying from heroin. But I have been thinking a lot about all of the people I knew who have died from overdoses and I have been wishing they were still here.”)

09. Dead Man

(Someone in the audience asks Ed how his arm is doing. As Ed tries to explain, the audience starts whooping and shouting random things. One seemingly drunk woman repeatedly shouts things and Ed finally asks her if she is okay. He apologizes for using bad language with his children here. What I assume is the same woman shouts a string of gibberish at Ed for several seconds. Ed says, “That is a really long sentence to be shouting at someone. Just stop now okay?” Ed manages to finally start talking about his wife and family and how fortunate he is to be able to write a love song and have every word be true. He dedicates the next song to his wife and her grandfather Jim.)

10. Just Breathe

(Ed talks about moving back to Chicago after living in San Diego when he was 17. He was very poor and took subways or busses to the library and would watch movies and look at music books. He would copy the chords from the books onto newspapers and scraps. Photocopying was “above his means” at the time. Years later he was asked to play a Beatles song for the film “I Am Sam”. Ed asked if the song was taken because he knew it really well. Ed thanks Sean Penn, who is at the show, for hiring to play the song for that film as well as the film “Into The Wild”.)

11. You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away-(Lennon, McCartney)
12. Setting Forth

(While Ed is getting his guitar changed, he notes that the crowd are “some rowdy Floridians tonight...you guys are really great and you go right up to the edge then you go over the edge and it is really not so good. Ya gotta watch that edge.” More requests are shouted and one particularly loud woman shouts “Ship Song.” Ed says, “I played that last night. Trust me, I got this. I got it all under control, respectfully yours.”)

13. No Ceiling
14. Guaranteed
15. Rise

(Ed says, “When I first started touring Sean Penn would ask me to play “Long Nights.” I told him I needed someone to play bass on it and at the time I didn’t have anybody to do it. So, this might be the first time that he gets to see it, because he is here tonight. And this isn’t why I mention it because that isn’t why he is here. Sean is just on his way to Haiti where he has been working valiantly to help people there. You can help out by going to the website http://jphro.org So I want to play this song for Sean who is a real hero and is doing real work to help.”)

16. Long Nights w/ Glen Hansard (for Sean Penn)
17. Immortality
18. Lukin (with “Slow Lukin” intro)
19. Porch

Encore Break 1

(Ed talks about meeting his boyhood idol, baseball player José Cardenal. Ed says they say don’t meet your heroes because they will only disappoint you. Sometimes it goes the other way and they go beyond your expectations. This one is for you José.”)

20. Unthought Known
21. Loud Uke
22. I Won’t Back Down-(Petty, Lynne)

(“This is one of the few tours where at the end of it I feel pretty good. I am enjoying it so much and I wish the tour was longer. So, Wednesday night we will be in Atlanta at the Kettle Club...okay that last part was complete bullshit...but you know, I have some work to do. We gotta finish the next Pearl Jam record...I think one of the reasons I don’t want this tour to end is because I am going to miss playing with Glen so much. It has just been fantastic and I really am going to miss him. The next song is the best song on “Into The Wild” and I can say that because I didn’t write it. It was written by Jerry Hannan from Northern California.”)

23. Society w/ Glen Hansard-(Hannan)

(This is the first song Glen and I ever sang together. He came down to the studio while we were working and helped us out. It is sung by The Everly Brothers. Grandpa Jim might know it.”)

24. Sleepless Nights w/ Glen Hansard-(Bryant, Bryant)

(Ed talks about the upcoming song and all of the talk about the “Fiscal Cliff.” He talks about how the very wealthy people in the banks and corporations got bailed out and now it is time for the people to get some relief.)

25. This Land Is Your Land w/ Glen Hansard-(Guthrie)
26. Falling Slowly w/ Glen Hansard-(Hansard, Irglová)
27. The End

(Ed thanks the audience and says it has been a pleasure playing for them tonight. He goes on to talk about the “Wounded Warriors” project. He talks about the friends of his that are soldiers and says, “We can be anti-war but pro soldier. People try to turn it around and say it is unpatriotic. But it is clear that we are anti-unnecessary war and we want our soldiers to be taken care of and supported. He mentions all the soldiers that are wounded. He says that for every one soldier that is killed over seas another ten commit suicide. http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org

He also talks about the tragedy that occurred at Roskilde and how that lead to the creation of the song “Arc”....this is the healing prayer I send out to... (the soldiers and the people killed at Roskilde).”

28. Arc

Encore Break 2

29. Hard Sun w/ Glen Hansard
30. Tomorrow Night-(Traditional)

Hurt is great, wish he played it in Phoenix, heard it in Santa Barbara, loved it. The only other song I wish he would dig out would be Running out of time.

What an amazing show. Just got back to my hotel. Long Nights, Hurt, and the passionate intro to Arc are the standout memories. And that Glen is the best opening act. Great time. Cannot wait till tomorrow.

It's nice to be nice to the nice.
  • Great, great show last night. The crowd had a ton of energy and I think EV and GH were drawing on it.

And while there were the occasional drunk people shouting in the crowd, it really was no more than other shows and even the drunks were respectful and didn't shout through the music. I think the crowd energy was like a wave and it was almost like Ed was a bit overwhelmed by it....but in a good way. :)

The crowd was liquored up for sure but I don't think it bothered Eddie or Glen as much as other nights. They seemed to laugh it off for the most part.

  • Great show! I'm so glad I was able to finally make it to one of the shows this tour. That venue is very cozy. There wasn't a bad seat in the place. Great setlist. I love the new song (I think it was just part of it). Seeing Eddie doing Immortality on his own kicking that box drum was amazing. I loved hearing Eddie and Glen sing together. I know we're all waiting for Pearl Jam to release another album and I can't wait. I also wouldn't mind Eddie doing another solo album but I hope Eddie and Glen decide to do an album together too. I love the poster, the postcard, EV mug that I can fit my size coffee in :D and I love you Eddie!

Great show, indeed. The venue makes for the perfect setting. Hurt was a highlight, as was Immortality. It was also very cool to attend with a rather small crowd and know that so many of Ed's family were also in attendance. It's really something to see him playing these emotional songs and being able to see his family/kids watch. It certainly felt special.

There's no doubt about it: he truly his a master and I think he's at the top of his game as a solo artist.

To the guy who shouted out "How's your arm?" Thank you for the image of Eddie flexing his muscle on his right arm with a huge smile on his face.

Ed had been strumming the guitar and talking for a while and when he started playing a familiar set of notes... the beginning of Immortality. Loved that reveal.

Arc was very powerful. A beautiful prayer to send into the world. Very emotional to hear.

Glen Hansard was great. Loved hearing Lies (which was a request from the crowd). Appreciative of a playful crowd, it's when they get belligerent that it's a little annoying.

Loved Tomorrow Night at the end of the show.

And when I started my car after the show the radio station I had been listening to was playing Yellow Ledbetter. Funny.

  • Thank You Kat ;) Great Review for a Great Show!
Both nights where way kool. To see Ed solo within five miles from home twice was Priceless and well worth the wait. I bought a Ukelele for Xmas I was so inspired." I'm One" was Sweet and "Immortality " is always killer. I can't wait for the band to come back to Tampa. It's been awhile. "Hard Sun" is fun to see Ed play. He seems to enjoy it and its a great song! "Arc" was very cool with Ed singing over 6-7 tracks of his voice adding them on in layers one at a time. We drink in Fl. Sorry if that offends you but unlike Washington, weed isn't legal here. This is a big problem here in the USA. You can get all the booze and RX pills you want yet bud is bad. The "drunks" were a quick and humorous distraction. Ed played over two hour sets both nights and sounded perfect throughout both shows. I don't know how he does it. Sure nice not having to travel to see him this time around. My girl got to see Ed the first night, my sister the second. They don't even know many songs and were blown away. My sister couldn't even wait for me to burn her the ITTW soundtrack. She bought it the next day. I can't wait to see Mad Season on DVD. Some of Mike's best guitar playing I think. I hope you get a chance to see Ed solo and PJ someday if you haven't, even if you have... Happy New Year, Cheers!
