I am trying to find a tube amp for my husbands birthday and would love some input as I do not play. I know that he loves Mike McCreedys sound, Eric Clapton, Chris Shiflett & Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and really loves old blues sounds (BB King etc...). He currently has a 10 year old LIne 6 amp that he is pretty much over and a couple Marshalls...
I have heard him talk about Bogner, Fender and Orange and a few others I can't recall.... Anyone have any ideas?

Today I found a slightly used "Bassman" reissue tweed tube amp for $1250... A little more than I'd like to spend....

I appreciate any input! THANKS! :)

  • You should check out vox ac15's. I recently got one and it's great sounding. I get great tones for any genre. And don't be deceived by only 15 watts, it can get loud.

A 5f6a 1959 Fender Bassman is one of the most recognizable and liked tube amps in history. Another great amp is the 1957 5e3 tweed Fender deluxe.

If your husband is after that tone, these amps will be a great addition to his collection of amps.

Mike and Ed use these amps, so that's definitely going to get him the tone you mentioned.

$1250 for a reissue bassman is a decent deal, maybe a tad high actually.

  • Thanks for the ideas!!! What do you think of the Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue 40W 1x12" combo amp??
  • If it's not beyond your budget, this is the perfect amp for those sounds you mentioned earlier:

It's not cheap, but it's not a toy, either. It's small enough to work at home, but can be loud enough to play with a group. And it sounds killer. In fact, I believe Dave Grohl toured with a very similar amp the last time they were on the road.

As for the Blues Deluxe amp, it's a pretty good amp also. It's a bit louder, at 40 watts, than the amp I posted (22 watts) and not quite as good on its own (the overdrive/distortion channel isn't very good). However, if your husband owns and uses effects pedals (stomp boxes), then this amp is pretty good with pedals.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

If you're looking for something very affordable, check this out: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifie ... -combo-amp

    Really good price.
  • Fender blues junior III is a good tube amp, not too expensive

  • This has been my go to amp. The great thing is, he can set it at 15 watts for playing 95% of the time, but if he really wants to get loud or have more clean headroom, he can crank it up to 50!

If you call them you can get it down to $800, probably less. I found a used one for $600 anout 18 months ago.

  • And if you're looking in Hot Rod amps, I'd pick this over those at the price range:

It may be better to take him to the store with a budget and have him pick one out... It's a personal thing, and what works for me may not work for MIG or your husband.
