Lionel Trains / electric trains

Anyone have a train they set up for the holidays or is super into it and has a set-up that they keep up all year round?

I have a Lionel set I put up in the basement. I bought it when the kids were younger and into Thomas. I wanted a more realistic vibe, the talking train was driving me nuts. Now we have expanded the track and a little village.
Nothing much, but it keeps the kids occupied. It's almost Leave it to Beaver-ish watching them watch the train go round and around.

no pix, at work. We go a couple of places around here and check out layouts. Kids always say, "we need one of those" or "why isn't ours this cool"

yes, had one as a kid and years ago I built a raised track for around the christmas tree which I would put up each year. It's being held hostage at the ex's, and I was actually thinking about it this morning - maybe I can have one of my sons rescue at least the engines and rolling stock for me. Building a new track could be a bit of fun.

we had a very cool pretty large train set when my two brother and i were kids. it took up an entire room and the engine had a light and was supposed to puff out smoke somehow but dad never could get that to work. we sat there for hours on end running this thing. it had a nice throttle and everything. i'd love to have a nice train set right now too. maybe oneday i'll get another.

grandpa (mom's dad) used to put a simple little plastic train around the christmas tree. added a little something special i guess.

  • Growing up my dad always set up an HO scale set. My brother and I got some engines and train cars to add to his set. I remember playing with those trains for hours. It's almost hypnotic just watching.

They haven't been set up for many years, and I don't really have room for a set up in my house. I have two little boys now, and we have a couple of those cheap toy sets that we put up around this time.

My dad recently passed away, and I've been thinking about the trains a lot. When my boys are a little over (passed the stage that they will destroy them), I want to get some of the stuff from my parents attic and start that tradition with them.

I am totally thinking of planning our Saturday around it, take a drive up there, see the whole thing, go to Cabella's, then hit the Cracker Barrel for lunch or dinner

(between Cabella's and the Cracker Barrel gift shop, I should be able to help my sons do all of their Christmas shopping)

    BAM!

Roadside America is great too. Have taken the kids up there once. There is just more fore the kids to do around Strasburg. Both are about an hour away, so that wins out more often.

I have an electric train set. Not sure if it's a Lionel or not, I'd have to go dig it out of the garage. Given to me by some guy who found out I wanted one when I was a kid.

Part of me wants to keep it because "they don't make toys like they used to" and part of me wants a train freak to adopt it and love it for ever and ever.

There used to be a burger place here that would serve you burgers on an electric train. It ran around the restaurant, passed by every booth. when your order was up, the cook would put it on the train, and drive it to your booth.

everything in that video is gone now... the restaurant, the Kingdome, and that green street car.
