No Matt Cameron = No Pearl Jam.

that doesn't make any sense. being a bass player and also a singer, I understand the role of each player in a band. I like to think we're all equal. but we're not. and the drummer (and to a slightly lesser extent the bass player) is about the most replaceable player in any band.

no ed = no pearl jam.

Your missing the point. None of the guys are replaceable, clearly to the 5 of them they think each is an important as the other. IMO I think if any one member left the band now, they would call it a day.

Matt has been in the band for 2/3rds of Pearl Jam's existence, I really don't get why people think he is just a commodity.

he's not just a commodity, but come on, how many drummers have they had? clearly they've gone on before without a drummer and replaced him. Ed was as high on Jack as he currently is on Matt. Maybe they would stop, maybe they wouldn't. I'm saying they COULD. Without Ed? they could NOT.

Last time I checked Pearl Jam wasn't The Eddie Vedder Band. Do you honestly think they'd go on without Stone or Jeff? Or Mike or Matt? Pearl Jam is five parts and I'm pretty sure the band members think this too. I very much doubt they'd continue with just say Ed and 4 backing guys ala GNR or Smashing Pumpkins.

Personally I wouldn't want them to continue as Pearl Jam if any of the current members left the band. It wouldn't be Pearl Jam IMO.

so we go from the possibility of a different drummer all the way to Ed and 4 replacements.

we were saying that Ed is the only one that is irreplaceable, not that he is the only one that needs to be in the band to make it Pearl Jam.

obviously, it would suck if any of them left. just saying that, a vocalist, not to mention one of the chief songwriters, in ANY band, that's the hardest position to fill and still it be the same band.

A Pearl Jam without Eddie would be... well, 'Journey'.
I know, I know... 'Alice In Chains'. But, seriously... Layne vs. without Layne... come on... really?
    ...
    As for Matt...
Go see 'Soundgarden'. Matt is the 'Soundgarden' drummer who moonlights with Pearl Jam. Don't get me wrong... I love Matt and I think he does great work with Pearl Jam... but, he is beyond AMAZING with 'Soundgarden'. He is a fucking BEAST with a little kid's haircut in that band. He should look more like a fire-breathing demon the way he works with that band.
To me, it is not a matter of being better... more of being different... in styles. If Pearl Jam is more Who based... Soundgarden is more Zeppelin/Sabbath based in overall sound/style. Matt just is a better fit with the droning, syncopated style of the latter. In my opinion.
    ...
You know who would fit Pearl Jam's style of music? Taylor Hawkins... a 70s based, modern day rock drummer.
But, that is never going to happen.

I think PJ could definitely continue with Cameron I just don't think they'd want to. Maybe if they could get Irons back on board they give it a whirl, and not to say they weren't great already, but they've become a well oiled machine live with Matt at the throne. I prefer alot of the earlier looser tours to how they've sounded the last several years, but I think that has a lot to do with how long they've played with Cameron.

Next to Matt I'd probably say Mike is most replaceable, but alot of that stems from the early days when they had much more of a signature sound carried by Stone and Jeff.

I don't think they're that inflexible. They have lots and lots of friends in the industry, and know plenty of drummers well enough to be able to find one who could fit in with them; I really see no reason why they wouldn't continue if Matt bailed for SG ... But again, irrelevant as far as I know, because Matt's still with them!

Again... I love Matt and love him being in Pearl Jam. But, go see 'Soundgarden' and see/hear how different that engine sounds in a metal car.
And since the perfect fit, Taylor Hawkins in not in the equation... What about Liam Finn being a fit? He'd probably have to let up on the accelerator a bit in order to do a long show in a sustained tour.
Or maybe Richard Stuverud of RNDM. He an Jeff make up a rhythm section that works together well. He too, would have to let up on the gas to make it through the night without blowing a gasket.
    ...
Oh, and what about Josh Freese? I've seen him in DEVO, Weezer (when Pat is playing guitar) and A Perfect Circle. I'm not sure if he has a regular gig or just pops up here and there.

    Just read this thread.

Agree with whoever who said no Matt Cameron = No Pearl Jam. Not because drummers are irreplaceable, but because I think Pearl Jam would not have stayed together if Matt didn't join when he did. Ed's alluded to this at at least a few shows I've been to. Or somewhere! I know I didn't make it up in my head.

Would they stay together now if Matt left? I'd rather not speculate. I love the band in its incarnation now. I just want to enjoy it for as long as I can.

PS Love Adam Levine, not sure about his music but he really is a big fan.

Not that I want Matt to be replaced, and don't think he will be at all, but if it HAD to happen, I'd be all over Richard Stuverud stepping in. I saw him with RNDM a couple weeks ago, and he was AMAZING, and outrageously entertaining as well. Also, I met him and chatted for a bit, and he is super happy and friendly as well. I only had to see him once live, and I became an instant fan. Of course, I'm hoping that RNDM have a future, so no need for Richard to be in PJ. :)

    His music sucks pretty bad.

Yes, Matt has done A LOT for PJ... I think at this point in their careers they could stay together without him. But I'm glad he's there. I don't think for a millisecond that MC would give up PJ for Soundgarden. No fuckin' way.
