How to spot fake posters?

What's a for sure way to see if a poster is fake on Ebay?

Particularly, an Ames Bros poster. Found one where there is a serial number. Where would the serial number be located if it were the real deal for an AP print run?

What am I looking for in the real deal?

Thanks.

Serial #'s? No serial numbers on posters.

The best way you can tell is by the colors, but you would need to have pics of a real poster first, then be able to compare it to the questionable one. Plus they would need to be pretty good resolution pics without seeing it in person.

Now did it say "serial number" or did it say "S/N" ?

  • My mistake, it said "S/N" not serial number. It was a an AP or AP2 print but didn't give what number. I knew there was a run of 100 for this particular poster.

Let me ask you guys this. Are fakes common?

I did a search on this and someone mentioned if it says "Ames Bros Posters" on the bottom, its a fake. If it says "Ames Bros Design" its real. Any truth to this?

You input is appreciated. Just hesitant at throwing good money on something that has a chance at being a bootleg/forgery/fake without having a good way to authenticate the work.

What poster are you talking about?

There are certain posters from 96, 98 that have been known to be faked in larger amounts.

For the 1998 Hartford Ames/PJ Poster I know the FAKE on the lower right corner reads:

    AMES POSTER / SERIBELLUM PRESS

The REAL one in the lower right hand corner reads:

    AMES DESIGN / SERIBELLUM PRESS

Or that is at least how i understand it... Hope that helps...

Sometimes it's best to contact the artist directly if you're not 100% sure on a print. They can help you out. :)

That is the thread I read concerning the Hartford fakeconcert and the Ames poster. I didn't know if that kind of forgery/bootlegging was common amongst Ames Bros posters.

I found a poster from 2006 that says," Ames Bros Posters".Didn't know if that constitute d it as a fake

Thanks for your insight. Sorry for typos, writing from a phone.
