"Hobbit" Animal Deaths?

I was looking forward to seeing this film but I'll definitely wait to hear more on this before I do. The article linked here has an update written by director Peter Jackson claiming no animals were harmed during actual filming. At this point it's a bit difficult to tell if Jackson's claim is completely true. A few questions come to my mind over this-- should the film producers be held responsible for the wrangler's actions and are the emotional lives of animals as well as their physical well being taken into account when using them in filming?

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

  • I'll never forget how I felt after reading about the making of 'Milo and Otis'.

    Not fantastic.

Some pugs were reported to have been injured as well. The bear scene was not a great time for the pug.

I'm not sure what has been confirmed as the truth, but the clip certainly had me wondering.

  • Horrific.
Some of these events are almost 2 years old, so why are we just now hearing about them? But I guess the revelations were timed for the movie premiere. I hope people remember this when it's time to buy (or NOT buy) their movie tickets.

Good question. I'm reluctant to think that anyone other than the wranglers should be held legally responsible. However, my gut is holding the film producers responsible. This news has turned me off from a film I was looking forward to seeing.

Animals should not be made to appear in films, period.
