Dare To Be Stupid: The "Weird" Al Thread

Sure, he can be VERY corny sometimes, but I've loved me some Weird Al since I was a kid. And when I'm bummed I can always throw on "Dare To Be Stupid" or "Off The Deep End" and be cheered up by what a total goofball this guy is. A lot of it is probably nostalgia, if I hadn't gotten into him as a kid, probably age 5 or so, then I might not like him so much as an adult. But I did, and I do. Who else?

  • I love Weird Al. Seen him live 3 times and it's always great. I have him in regular rotation with Pearl Jam or Led Zeppelin or whoever and have since Bad Hair Day. My favorite Weird Al songs are the homages or "style parodies" as he calls them. The songs at aren't a parody of any specific song, but of a band's style. Genius In France (Zappa), Pancreas (Brian Wilson), Young Dumb And Ugly (AC/DC), Dare to be Stupid (Devo). These are my favorites.

But nothing touches the brilliant Beastie Boys nod "Twister". If I was trapped on a desert island and had only 1 minute of music for the rest of my life...it'd be Twister.

Yeah, I really like the style parodies a lot. But as a 5 year old kid when "Dare To Be Stupid" came out (and for the next few albums), I had no clue who half the artists were that he parodied, and likely hadn't heard many of the songs. I think all I had as a kid for a long time (probably until my teens) were Weird Al albums. I knew some of course, like Michael Jackson, but I didn't know who The Kinks were. As a 5 year old Stars Wars fan all I knew was that "Yoda" was an awesome song about my favorite movie.

I miss the "Al TV" specials he used to have when he'd release an album. Those "interviews" were so funny. Here's a couple choice ones.

I bought Weird Al In 3D when I was about 7 years old. I can still recite the announcers portion of I Lost On Jeopardy verbatim.

All of the originals on that album are gold.

I know this has been posted somewhere around here before, as this is where I first saw it, but I guess I can re-post it in this thread. It's pretty hilarious.

We love him too, my daughter and I have travelled to see him and we had a meet and greet.
He's as nice and sweet as he is creative and talented.

He has seen her some tough times with his humor, hearing her laugh after her
accident when all we heard were tears can not really be expressed with words.

He's the man! faithful fans we shall remain. :D

    can't forget this one! 8-)

not ashamed to admit that weird al was my first musical love. like most, i'm guessing, i was a kid when i first heard him and my fandom grew from there. i am pretty sure the first album i ever got, on cassette, was weird al's greatest hits, in like 88 or 89. his parodies (song and style) no doubt influenced my future listening habits as it was a great way to be introduced to so many different kinds of music.

i've seen him live a couple times (bad hair day tour and some time in the early 00's) and if you have not seen weird al, you really should. great shows.

i've kinda stopped following him since after poodle hat. i have lynwood but i think i've only listened to it once or twice. haven't even heard alpocalypse.

    I. HATE. SAUERKRAUT!

I'm not sure if it really influenced my listening habits, but having gotten into him at such a young age (not knowing most of the songs/bands parodied) as I got older and would actually hear the songs I would always be excited when I heard them. I guess my appreciation of Al sort of worked in reverse. Where they are meant to be funny because you know the song and here is a funny take on it, I always liked the songs for the funny lyrics, and then when I'd hear the actual song, I would "get it" in full effect. For the most part I didn't know which songs were song parodies, style parodies, or originals until later in life. There are some exceptions of course, like the Michael Jackson songs, Theme From Rocky XIII, etc.

Had you never seen it before? Or did the thread just remind you to watch it again?

I can't remember, but I think I saw it in the theater. I vividly remember seeing the preview for it before seeing some other movie, and my friends and I being more excited about that than the actual movie we were seeing. I can't imagine that after seeing the preview I didn't see it in the theater, but I just can't remember.

Jurassic Park came out 4 years after UHF. It did however get crushed by Ghostbusters 2, Lethal Weapon 2, Batman, License To Kill, etc.
