OFF THE GULF COAST - KHOU-TV says that two people are dead and two people are missing after an explosion at a platform in the Gulf of Mexico.

In addition, four people have been airlifted to West Jefferson Hospital, two of them who are said to be in critical condition.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirms there is an offshore platform burning in the Gulf of Mexico in the area of West Delta Block 32.

Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts said the rig in question is a shallow water platform in the Gulf of Mexico. It is near West Cote Blanche Bay, south of New Iberia on the south-central Louisiana coast.
The rig belongs to Black Elk Energy out of Houston and it produces both oil and natural gas.

A spokesman for the company confirmed that the rig was manned at the time of the fire.

He said several boats are responding to the fire, both Coast Guard and Good Samritans.

When will we learn? Huge oil companies continue to explore in places that are a recipe for disaster. For example, Russia now has set up the first arctic oil platform. The Russian oil industry spills 30 million barrels of oil each year- seven times the amount that escaped in 2010 from the Deepwater Horizon spill. SEVEN TIMES AS MUCH! And that's just Russia! If we don't move away from oil toward renewable energy learn to consume less will continue toward making this planet inhospitable to ourselves.

It's possible, but it's too early to jump to that conclusion. Just because there was an explosion doesn't necessarily mean oil is pouring into the Gulf. I sure hope not. Too bad people were hurt and killed... it is a known danger for those in that occupation, but that is terrible.

Yeah, it's terrible that people were injured and killed. As much as I push for alternative energy and try to keep my own fuel consumption down, the fact is these folks do hard and dangerous work and we all benefit from that. As much as I hope for cleaner safer energy and hope there was no spill, I also wish these folks well.

this is truly shocking since all we learned and all the precautions put in place from the BP gulf disaster just a few years ago

What's shocking, exactly? This was a tragic accident caused by human error (a sad mistake made by a worker). The environmental impact is negligible.

The only way to guarantee that there is no risk of spills due to accidents on oil rigs is to end ocean drilling.... that is not gonna happen. As far as I can tell, the industry has indeed learned some lessons from the BP disaster. That does not mean that all accidents will stop though. There are still just men who are trying to earn a pay cheque on those rigs.

It should be shocking in that you would think we learned about the dangers of offshore drilling (and yes, that will not stop any time soon) but we should be more shocked or at least more educated about the fact that these spill go on all the time. Greenpeace reported the statistic I mentioned above regarding Russia spilling 30 million barrels of oil each year. We should be shaken by our impact on the planet in terms of how it will affect future generations. We're not. We're too concerned about how much crap we can buy on Black Friday, crap produced mainly in third world countries where upwards of 250 million children world-wide are enslaved to produce these "goods". We're too concerned with how we are going to live without Ho Ho's and Ding Dongs and Cheez Doodles.

We are shocked into numbness. We are asleep.

Was the last one a mess? I remember a lot of hype and then it kind of quietly went away.

I can't wait for renewable energy to become more widely accepted.

I just want to see these oil companies freak out... it will be an interesting day... if it ever comes to fruition.

we can power pretty much all we need now with renewables ...
