Publix Supermarket has all the benefits you post except
the right to strike ...plus they give employees stock, 4 bonus's a year, dividend pay out twice a year, and bereavement pay. The largest and fastest-growing employee-owned supermarket chain in the United States. Employees can retire a millionaire and they don't even have to go into management. NO unions.

I don't think anyone is arguing that unions didn't have their time and place. And done CEO compensation is certainly out of whack. But, giving the current version of the union credit for all of that is like giving the Republican Party credit for current environmental efforts....Nixon started the EPA.

What is the purpose of a union today? To ensure their members aren't paid by merit? I doubt that unions ever thought they'd become another bureaucracy. But they have. And far too often it's more about protecting the union an it's leaders than the members. And in my personal experience, they have been all over the place, from actually helping safety to actively fighting against it, because they don't understand but are never willing to admit that.

I agree with what you are saying. I am under no illusions that unions are perfect, with any organization that has become old and comfortable there will be corruption. I have heard many terrible stories about unions. But, I believe that if you take away unions today we will go back to the practices of yesterday. With most companies you are are number and the bottom line is all that matters. I believe that some of the last lines of defense are the unions. I think we would be far worse off without them. Sometimes we have to take the good with the bad....for now at least.

And I do think some here would like to pretend that unions have done nothing to help......I thought I would lay out some of the good, it's sometimes easy to forget.

That's good to hear. If Wal-Mart were willing to give these benefits to their employees they would have no reason to walk out. They are only asking for the same. Left with no other options they only have one option left, to organize.

Yup. That's all they have become. I liken them to another level of government.

Interesting, I also worked at Wal-Mart while I was going to school, and we had no where near those benefits. But that was a while ago so maybe things have changed. Is she in a management position?

I don't shop at Walmart, something bad always happens to me there
    I like target'

it would be wonderful if business would appreciate their workers.
I'd like to think most do.
I have learned in business to put myself in our employees shoes,
to think what I would want and need. To do little things like
birthday treats and bonuses. Ask how someone feels about something in the shop
but most of all listen, often they want to just talk about the family or stuff
    going on in their lives.

Right now to bring everyone together,
we are decorating the shop and each employee will have their favorite
musician photos in the area they work.

I bet ya'll can guess mine

Well that was more to show that unions aren't just all about helping the common worker. I imagine as part of those scams that the unions heads who helped get the mob that money made a ton of cash. I also read a book about the 5 crime families in NYC a few years ago. It was interesting to see how much of a hold they have on unions to the point where things like construction, laundry services and trash pick up in New York are significantly higher in New York compared to other similar sized cities. They mob has such a strong hold on the Fulton Fish market that restaurants would come and buy fresh fish, and if you weren't paying kickbacks to the family they made sure you didn't get fresh fish, and in turn fish prices in new york were like 20-30% higher than the rest of the US east coast.
