Hey folks. If you get driven nuts with micro-phonic noises on pre amp tubes like I do, it looks like we might of found a cheaper pre amp tube that is pretty quiet and can handle some abuse.

Beats spending $50 on a flat plate pre amp tube...

Which flat plate preamp tube are you purchasing for $50? Just curious.

I have been impressed with the new production tung-sol 12ax7's recently. I also like the mullard reissue's, TAD, and the Shuguang 12AX7C's. I usually test 20 preamp tubes before I pick one for the amp I'm working on.

The ruby tube you linked too is nothing more than a JJ/Tesla tube that has been tested. The 12ax7A's have lower gain characteristics vs. the B and C's.

One of the reasons this tube claims lower microphonics is because of the smaller plate structure. The long plate's are more susceptible to microphonics.

The amp on my bench today is a hand-wired Fender 5C3 circuit that uses octal preamp tubes. Really cool creamy and thick sounding tubes when overdriven. But a pretty big problem with noisy, microphonic, rattling internal components. I'm a/b'ing a bunch of them right now hoping to find some that'll make me happy. I just installed new production tung-sol 6SL7's in this amp and they are an improvement over the GE 6SC7's that howled like a wolf!

    BTW...if it's not clear...I build amps ;)
