Who is this rapper named COMMON from Hell on Wheels?

I've been watching Hell on Wheels... amazing show, btw! Another AMC production, ie Breaking Bad and Mad Men..

I just realized that one of the lead characters is a rapper named Common. He's a real good actor.
Is anyone familiar with the show or his rapping?

This show is cast very, very well.

    He came out on Stage with Jay Z the night before PJ played @ MIA.
    Very good actor, I am not a rap guy so I am not familiar with his stuff but thought it was cool that he was @ MIA.

    Never heard his music. But he is a good actor i enjoyed his role in Street Kings and Smokin Aces.
