They are not aggressive. Generally well crafted songs. errr i'm really not sure how to describe them. Veckatimest is my fav album by them.

Saw them live last month, the music from Shields gets much louder and aggresive live.
i think they are quite different

animal collective is definitely way more experimental and "out there". But i think at their core, they get lumped in together, because their the same genre, have similar animal names, and are two bands who at their core are about vocal harmony as opposed to instrumental and musical power. I think both Ed Droste and Panda Bear, were both hugely influenced as kids by the Beach Boys and other groups that rely on vocal harmony.
I also think they are lumped in together because they both are among the biggest indie bands of the last 10 years. Two Weeks maybe GB's biggest song to date, could be compared to quite a few of AC's songs as well.
I like it. I have to kind of get my head in the right state for it but i like how intracate the music and vocals can be.
Not blown away but i did not really get into the last album until i digested it a few times so i'm going to give it a few good listens over the next week
