I want another early 90s to happen.
Everything is so stale and clean and boring now.

Some great comments on the article too.
It makes me sad that there is nothing in music to unify people like it once did.
My teenage niece cannot name one rock band, hell she does not even know what rock is.
All she knows is One Direction, Justin Bieber, and Gangnam Style.
I wish I was older when music was good so that I could appreciate it when it was big and I could've gone to shows.

A comment which is spot on in my opinion:

Granted I'm an old rock man, but I think much of the stuff today (and for some time) lacks guts, whatever the genre. Music is meant to be performed and appeal to the primal part of you that responds.
I think that too much effort goes into polishing recordings to within an inch of their lives within recording studios, and not enough into performing effort.
The result is music that is formulaic and bland, and consequently does not appeal greatly. And people don't buy!

Just reading comments on the 80s and how bad it was.
Well blame the industry and media for that.
They ignored bands like The Pixies, Husker Du, REM, and all the hardcore punk bands instead they played poodle rock.

But when I listen to underground rock I don't hear anything exciting there either.
I believe ideas have run out for new sounds in rock.
Heck I struggle to come up with riffs that have not already been done.
    Has rock run its course?

    Love this discussion!!!
    Some of my thoughts:
Most mainstream music TODAY is way overplayed and quite frankly cruddy...
We have a tendency to believe if we grow up with it, its better than the current...
iTunes revolution, illegal downloading and talentless "talent" :)
So many channels in which to get music...

Kind of like TV - same argument (for the most part can be made, no?)

Maybe I'm getting to be a cranky old man, but I believe "good music is good music"...and there is a tremendous lack of it nowadays..
After the mid 90's I've really come to like: Old Crow Medicine Show, Mumford & Sons, "old" Wolfmother, Black Keys, Killers, Raconteurs & Gaslight Anthem- great musicians, great messages, rockin' live and generally talented/hold my interest...man, but that's about it.

There is a decline - no doubt.
Great discussion, can't wait to hear others thoughts!

  • Music in the early 90's was: Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston, Tag Team, Janet Jackson, SWV, Snow, Boyz II Men, Brian McKnight, UB40, Tony Toni Tone, P.M. Dawn, Aerosmith, and Meatloaf. There was this other grunge genre that pretty much only 16-25 year olds enjoyed, which made advertisers and marketers drool which is why it was so prevelant in pop culture, but not getting nearly as much chart topping success as these other bands.

Music has always been bad and it's always been good, music sales plumetted because beginning in 1999 it was available to the masses for free with minimal risk of getting caught.

Even though there was some horrendous music that came out of the 80's I think the decade gets a bad rap as there were plenty of great bands like REM, U2( this is actually the period when they were good) Van Halen, Metallica, Queen, Dire Straits, Talking Heads, Bruce,Petty, Mellencamp I could go on and on. As great as the 70's were don't forget this was the decade that gave us disco.

Hah, the period when I first really got into music (1999-2000) is just when "bad music" starts again on the graph. I knew it. Seriously though, I remember it being devastating to check out all those 90s bands, and find out that most of them had disbanded, or were on hiatus, or worse. It felt like I had missed the good stuff ruling the world by just 5 years, and now limp bizkit was in charge.
And I'm probably getting old and grumpy, but those bands I first loved are the ones still most dear to me now...I haven't heard a "new" band that has really excited me to the levels of fandom for a long time, with the only exception being the gaslight anthem. I still read up on new things, and check new artists out, but my personal important discoveries these days have been going back in time (listening to the who mainly, but also led zep, bowie, etc.) and digging up unheard things there.
