Ickes and the shifting sands of political terminology.

In a book I'm reading I came across an interesting section on Harlod L Ickes, the man who served in various roles in FDR's cabinet. Ickes was a Progressive within the Republican part serving under a Democrat president. He was a strong supporter of civil rights and civil liberties, opposed Japanese-American internment in WWII and helped establish Kings Canyon National Park.
The lines of political terminology are drawn so much deeper in the sand today it hard to fathom this combination in current politics.
