Struggling to come up with riffs...

Everything I play sounds like something that had already been done.
I am finding it hard to sound original.
Anyone kind enough to offer some tips on how to create a song?

try playing the same riffs in a different tuning. 1/2 step down makes a huge difference.



that is what i try to do anyway....


maybe try a different effect? like a subtle phaser or chorus?


the fact is that you most likely are not going to do something that has never been done before, as there have been millions of bands since the 1950s. the vast vast majority of which never properly recorded anything, let alone mounted any sort of a tour.


there is nothing wrong with letting your influences shine through in your own songs.

When this happens to me i immerse myself in some music way away from rock. Listen to some really early classical jazz. Also classical music will open ur mind to new arrangements and themes. And to mess with ur head listen to Louis Moondog Hardin

Thanks guys.
I have no effects other than a distortion box.
No training in music, self taught here, punk rock inspired playing.
It is frustrating me.
I spent 2 hrs on the couch with my accoustic, I came up with something but it is mellow.
I want something hard rocking.

The great do steal, but also the Gallagher bro's steal so it's still really a crapshoot.

Okay so I came up with 2 riffs since making this thread.
However I just cannot imagine a vocal melody over the top, I've written some poetry/lyrics just cannot fit them in.
