and you choose not to leave. THEN you complain about not getting seen to quick eneough.

I understand that ALL life is valuable and important BUT where do you then rank if you willing choose to ignore orders to get to safety?

Heard a story on NPR the other day about folks in Rockaway not getting relief or aid(seemingly on demand).

What say you?

I say if your told to leave and you don't ... you're a dumbass ...who is selfish, should be fined and billed for any rescue services.

Ask not what you can do for your country. Ask what your country can do for you.

I haven't been in that situation before, hope to hell I never am...but assuming I had the means and was of able-body to evacuate, I would. It doesn't make sense to stay otherwise, and put myself and potential rescuers at risk.

Weather patterns are fairly-accurately forecast these days, and knowing beforehand provides the precious benefit of time to gather up loved ones, necessities, etc.

I'm sure this is a touchy subject for some, and like I said, I've never experienced orders like that.

(it strikes me as much more frightening to have no warning whatsoever - like with an earthquake - where you're already scared as hell, power's out, shit's broken and you have to get out NOW)

I have to say that if you are warned and stay you have to take responsibility for your actions- as long as there was nothing preventing you from leaving, that is. If someone doesn't have the resources to find and stay elsewhere, that can make it tough.

Hedonist, you're absolutely right about earthquakes. There is never a warning. I think I prefer that. I don't want to know if something cataclysmic is going to happen. I've lived all but 2 years of my life on the west coast and never worried about quakes. I'm rather fond on Mother Nature showing her stuff- ice storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms (those were back in NY state '76 and '78). Being face to face with a bear across a creek once- well, ok, that scared me. And a few people have scared me. Those were the worst experiences of all.
